I started an untwinked Amazon the other night on /p8 and zoomed through act 1 including archer packs in cave areas in no time.
You must be doing it wrong.
D2 beginning was easy, unless you had problems with Quill rats.
I think the D3 beta was easier than D2's relative areas, I really don't think there is a question. I don't think D2 is necessarily hard anyway, but in the case of Coldcrow, try it with an untwinked barb on p1, you'll be surprised how tough she is. If you remove her from the equation though, the difficulty in D2 is not from any inherent quality of the game, but from a lack of knowledge regarding skills and mechanics, and poor system design, especially regarding mana regen at low levels. So if someone says D2 is harder than D3 to imply superiority, I think they have missed the forest for the trees.
I think one important difference is that D3 low level heroes are much more powerful than D2 low level heroes.
I played D2 as single player, so I was playing untwinked on 8 player games, and the only monsters I ever found difficult until Hell were Blood Raven/Coldcrow (only in Normal) and Rakanishu if I was struggling for resists. D2 was pish easy.
Normal Diablo was hard if you didn't bring the right resistance gear.
Act 3 Temples could be death traps in all difficulties
Stygian Doll explosions were brutal in NM/Hell and best left for the merc.
Also bugged monsters like Black Souls and the Poison Cloud left by guest Vipers.
I played through act 1 just now on a pally. I got a little bored because it was so easy, monsters miss you 90% of their attacks in the first few areas.
It was so easy that I /players 8 just to get some challenge out of it lol.
D2 is not harder than D3..not even close.
If you get hit by a "bow pack" in d2 you might wanna consider dodging their arrows by moving
