In the gold auction house, you will receive the gold from your sale (minus the transaction fee) immediately. In the real-money auction house, the proceeds of a successful sale (minus the transaction fee and transfer fee, if applicable) will be reflected in your Battle.net Balance or approved third-party payment service account after a minimum 24-hour processing window. In most cases, the auction proceeds will appear within 72 hours, although in rare cases this could take up to 5 days.

Or even the more common scenario of account hacking.

But what happens to the buyer if an item gets bought from a hacker? Giving him his money back and taking away his item is not enough of a solution for him! Let's say he bought an upgrade and sold his old item, now he's left with an empty item slot!

That said, I really wonder how they'll handle any such scenarios for which they need the "up to 5 days" delay.

That's interesting. AH could actually be the ultimate anti-dupe tool. Never even though about that.
