I was playing the D3 beta with a couple of friends, and we were on one of the later quests when another friend joined our party who hadn't started any quests yet, and suddenly he had the same quest as us (thus skipping all of the previous content?). So my question is... does anyone know how quest progress works when you join someone else's party that's on a different quest than yours? I can't imagine Blizzard would let you just join a quest for someone that's on "kill Belial" and all of a sudden you have access to the next act when you finish it with them.
Anyone know (preferably with an official source) how this is intended to work?
During the open beta I joined a game that was on the Shattered Crown (quest 3) with a newly created level 1 wizard, we went all the way through to the Skeleton King.
Afterwards I started a solo game with said wizard, I was unable to choose anything other than the start of The Fallen Star (quest 1).
If I remember correctly, these kind of things are okay to do according to Blizzard. Jay W. said that Blizzard doesn't want players to do this since it ruins their experience but if they really want to Blizzard won't stand in the way.
But keep in mind that there is a cap to how much XP a player can get from monster kills, so just because you're in act 4 with a lvl 1, you won't level up particularly fast. (There should also be some sort of cap for quest completion bonuses).
I am also curious about this, i played with a friend and we both started at question 1. After a few quests i left the game and when i logged back into play solo i could carry on where i left off.
correct me if im wrong but i think it works like this.
if you join a friends game and you are on the same quest as him or lower your solo progress will save so you can carry on on your own once the party drops.
However if you join a friends game who is on Q5 and you are up to Q4 you join him at Q5 even if you go to Q10 in the grp once you go solo again you will reset back to Q4 because you didnt finish it.
if you join a party you must make sure you are in the players game who is on the lowest quest so every one keeps the progress.
amirite?
Am i allowed to "bump" on these forums.....?
This is a very slow moving thread, either no one knows or no one cares.
the answer to this however will make a massive difference to the game for me as I'll be dropping in and out of different games with different friends regularly.
I am also interested in an answer to this.
To respond to the original post a bit, Blizzard have said that they want to make it as easy as possible for people to play together if that's what they want to do. So, yeah, you can join a quest with a friend no matter where they are in the game. However, the game is designed to give you optimal experience around a certain area at a certain level, so skipping ahead may give you terribly low experience, and you'd be better off playing through at an appropriate point in the game rather than skipping ahead. No idea how this works for different difficulty modes yet.
To answer brootuskx's question: I don't think anyone knows for certain at this point. I suspect that your interpretation is correct, though.
