Was playing around to see just how much healing monks have...
Made this: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/monk#afRXQg!XYT!acaZaa
holy crap...
Transcendence passive is pretty crazy.
50 Spirit= 3100 heal
25 Spirit= 1575 heal
10 Spirit= 620 heal
Adjusted numbers for including transcendence(all numbers for self only): In order of Cost Effectiveness.
Serenity with peaceful repose rune: 6822-8372 for 10 spirit.
Breath of Heaven runed with circle of life: 9638-11,250 for 25 spirit.
Inner Sanctuary with Safe Haven Rune: 9610 for 30 spirit.
Mantra of healing with sustenance: 10,540 for 50 spirit (Assumes runed version heals for 2480.8 per tick for 3 ticks)
Cyclone Strike with soothing breeze rune: 4240 heal for 50 spirit

With such high armor from STI, the double regen rune on MoH might help more than the 10% Vita. And if you wanted even more heals, you could replace Mystic Ally with Inner Sanctuary's regen rune xD
When playing around I was also toying around with maxing HP as that has always been a tactic to survive the random spike damage that happens when the stars align for mobs to poop on you. But your right i totally missed inner sanctuary, time to edit post :P
I think this is the monks niche. From what I can see monks have plenty adequate damage, but I don't think they will be as devastating in the damage department so much as being extremely survivable with good damage. A monk will be able to stack up dodge and healing which combined with armor and their strong cc/defensive skills will make the monk possibly the sturdiest character in the game. This is just a guess.
I was planning something similar, but if you swap mantra of healing into mantra of retribution and the build get's a clear niche. Endless healing alone isn't much of a game plan, but pair it with damage reflect and it starts to make sense.
It's possible. Barbarians have a lot of lifesteal built into their kit, and I'm sure lifesteal will be a bigger part of this game than it was in D2. You can't forget that these two classes are melee, which means that they will be much more exposed to beating than the DH/Wizz/WD who are able to kite their enemies to the ends of the earth. I think it will al balance out, but we'll have to wait and see.
