Advertising is all about getting people to hear whatever it is the advertiser wants them to hear.
And people want to be entertained - it makes sense that advertisements will make themselves entertaining in order to get the viewer to watch it.
Of course, the D3 Launch website isn't quite the same - just throwing that out there :P.
Well, I guess it depends with what kind of expectation you come to the site. If you go there expexting to be amazed and blown away, and epicly entertained, then, yeah, sure, you will be disappointed. If you see it for what it is, a promotional site primarily aimed at people who are relativly new to the game, and go there expecting to make banners, then you will be mildly amused by it. I, personally, spent about 20 minutes making banners, saved them, and then never returned.
Having said that, I do agree that the site could've been so much more. D3's PR department certainly isn't the best one in gaming industry, or even in Blizzard, and they made plenty of blunders over the years. Perhaps the worst one was million likes on Facebook fiasco, after reaching million likes (and giving few screenshots every milestone) they gave us five old wallpapers. Which was wonderfully disappointing since I remember that a lot of people thought that we would get release date (that way a year or two ago). This just illustrates my point, while I genuinely believe that D3 dev team is one of the best in the industry, their PR department is horrible. So, this is really to be expected.
