I think the tank/dps style will definitely not be part of Diablo 3, even in Inferno. Items play a big role, and I think the combat is much more GuildWars 2 than it is any MMO. I agree finding a good Monk in a random public game will be harder than finding an average button-mashing Wizard or something. Though I'm mostly talking about 4-players with good friends; I'm hoping to get 3 friends to play with me most of the time, and all of us have played Diablo 2 for a while so I'm confident in my friend's Monkability.
MMO's clearly have too much mind share. People need to stop thinking tank/dps/bs.
There is one role in Diablo 3, Smashing Demonic faces in. All characters exist in that role and that role only.
With 4 player party you are forced to have 2 guys with the same primary attribute, but as long as one player is Barbarian, you don't have 2 pairs of shared primary attribute. That might not make a big difference, but on the very first playthrough it probably helps you to gear up slightly faster, as you don't have players looking for items with similar stats.
It's kinda funny to speculate now, but I'm sure many of the guesses will be completely wrong, even some of the most educated ones. We have so little information after all and I'm sure there will be some synergies and OP skills that'll be "found" once the game is released.
Compared to MMOs you could say this, but it's not that simple. There is no "true" support or healer roles, but the roles of each character will still be slightly different, and there'll be some room for teamplay and strategy.
People really need to stop flipping out when terms are used descriptively. No one is stupid enough to think that D3 classes can behave exactly like Tanks or Healers in wow. But the Barb can taunt every 15 seconds, can gather mobs to him, and can boost his defense in a lot of ways - which means he can be played kinda tanky. And the Monk has the only direct group heal, which means he can sometimes heal. People are just describing ways those classes can possibly be played - so don't get your panties in a bunch.
There's alot more to smashing faces than pushing arcane orb 12 times. If you don't cc nightare-inferno you will die constantly. Thats why we use words to describe people who play a secondary role. That's why some guilds in wow can't progress because their dps only know one role....dps. People need to learn to multitask and think about the team.
Tank/DPS/support[healer] type roles should emerge naturally from any game with tank/dps/healing abilities... With that said I do like diversity and I'm not a big fan of the Witch Doctor... I'll be playing a Barbarian and my brother a monk... we'll be looking to make wizard and DH friends.
God you guys are making it sound like the monk sucks and is only good for buffs. So far the buffs the monk provides don't seem like anything super-special (compared to what most other classes have to offer in other ways), so I really expect them to make him as appealing for solo as any other class, and thus he'll have his 20% representation. Then again a lot of people I talk to do seem to hate the monk style for unknown reason. I only hated the monk in the beta because his generator skill has weak AOE...
