I played through the open beta until I had about 2 capped of each class and in that time, I noticed a sever lack of monk specific drops. I found dozens of wands and hand crossbows, a few vodoo daggers, a couple of rare ones even, and even a couple of rare might weapons and enough might weapons to reasonably outfit 2 capped dual weilding barbarians. However, when it came to monk specific weapons, I saw 1 non magical daibo, a grand total of 4 fist weapons, only 2 of which were magical and one of the magical ones dropped at 10:00 PM on Sunday.
To me, it felt like the Monk and Wizard were the two classes that really needed their class specific weapons, but monk really got the raw end of the stick. Did everyone else have that same experience. I know it's going to be slightly better in release, if only for the fact that the one and only monk BS recipe I had was way over my level, at least I'll have that when I make my full version monk, but really? 2 days and not enough monk weapons to outfit 1, let alone 2 monks that I had.
Yeah, I know, random is random, but I really felt cheated having to dual wield daggers on a class that should have their class specific weapons form the get go, when the bow user could be just as cool with a bow while hand crossbows rained from the sky. Sadly enough, I didn't even go hand crossbow with one of my hunters, I went bow.
100% agree. I do however think that this is a low leveled issue and monk specifics will be available more frequently later on (keep in mind that the monk has BOTH fist weapons and Daibo as class specifics).
I used a sword shield combo which worked just fine for me. I forgot to try starves, apparently they work too or maybe not. In fact the monk looks cool with the shield slung over his back.
I think this is just an artifact of the specific level cap. That is, the best weapons in the beta tend to be the "item class" of sufficient level to drop either in the later cathedral levels or from the Returned. The best weapons I ever ended up with tended to come from the SK--when a magical weapon with two mods contributing to damage dropped (generally IAS and +elemental damage).
The DH has access to the second "tier" of hand crossbows (light hand crossbow) and can craft quivers. The barb has access to sickles, which are better than the lower tiers of non-class weapons available (sabers, broad axes). You can also get a double axe from the Returned, but I've not seen one with mods in my play throughs, though its DPS is equivalent to some sickles with mods. Sacrificial knives and mojos drop for WDs, and Wizards get access to the second "tier" of wands (oak wand? something?) as well as orbs.
However, the monk gets kind of screwed in this regard. Knuckles are the first tier of fist weapons, but they aren't any better than non-class-specific items that drop around the same time (sabres, broad axes, dirks), and are usually worse. Spikes are the next tier, and they used to drop in beta, but I'm not sure they do anymore. You used to be able to craft a killer daibo, but again, the level for it is too high now. I'm not sure if the Returned drop spikes--but even if they did, that would take some grinding to get one to drop. In any case, I'm sure that the mlvl requirement for dropping spikes is probably just a bit higher than the Returned, meaning that in a real playthrough no one would notice such a thing. It's just the artificial content barrier being placed in a way where all other classes get access to the "next tier" of weapons, while the monk doesn't.
Fist weapons and head gear seemed to be in short supply- although headgear could be crafted- lvl 10 I believe. I didn't see a single ammy from either vendor or drop
I noticed that as well, are ammys and rings for higher levels ?

I got one ring that granted +1 life when I hit enemy. Can't remember exactly how it wrote, and it was gone with pre-open beta wipeout of characters. after open beta I didn't dropped a single ring/amulet.
and yeah, my monk ended up using axe or smth at lvl 10...
just white knuckles dropped..
Actually, one of the vendors always had rings, so there was those. I never did find an amulet though.
