Just like jmervyn, my vast intellect and incredible knowledge distracted me too much from the easy solution .

I figured out something which is actually correct, but which didn't explain why children could solve it if they don't know numbers, so I wasn't sure enough about it to consider it as reliable.

Still, it makes sense if you (don't) think about it, if you know what I mean. My son knew his Arabic numerals by that age (and was trying to learn Latin numerals, oddly enough), so I didn't make the connection.
