Forcing 4:3 aspect ratio?

Any chance anyone knows how to force a 4:3 aspect ratio on a modern ATI card?

I'd rather have black sidebars than a hugely stretched game, but I can't find anything to tell me if it's possible.

If you have the AMD VISION Engine Control Center, look for "My Built-in Displays" and in "Properties", select to preserve aspect ratio, in the scaling options. If you don't have the same control panel, then search for similar headings and you'll find it. Here's a picture for reference:

I had seen that option before but it was greyed out. Turns out, you have to change the monitor to a non-native resolution before it becomes available.
