IMO, it would be nice if they changed all the "radius" affixes to something called "Grasp" (or not keyworded if they think that would be confusing to grandmas), which would marginally increase all AoE abilities used by a character, including the AoE "range" of picking up gold and health globes. It could be soft-capped or hard-capped, but it would be kind of awesome if your gear could enhance the blast radius of your multi-target nukes. This would also go with the flavor of having some affixes provide both offensive and defensive help, as the primary stats currently do.
With this change, the gear offers both a minor quality of life improvement as well as an offensive enhancement that some might consider worthwhile. It's also synergistic such that it enhances the possibility for frantic fire-and-forget gameplay, dropping relatively large AoEs as you run around picking up health globes with your augmented pickup radius.
The whole point of having the affix is to have affixes in the pool that are not optimal.
You need to have these kind of useless affixes to make items with better affixes have value.
This is so very true. If all affixes would be excellent then every item that drops is excellent. Just like in Diablo 2 the game needs sub optimal affixes to make certain that the items with the good affixes retain their value.
The goal ought to be to make some stats useless for some classes/specs but awesome for some others.
I kinda agree, although I think that it's not needed to make affixes useless even for some classes. It would be enough to make them less useful.

Why? Maybe I'm completely fine with having a few percent less DPS or Armor just so I can have +7 yards of pickup radius. It's also possible, that some of the best Legendary and Set armors will have it, so you won't have to choose. Besides, with good gear there should a little room for stats like these.

Don't forget that pickup radius already has some offensive applications for certain classes. Just look at the DH's Vengeance passive. Then there's Power Hungry for the Wizard and Circle of Life, Gruesome Feast and Grave Injustice for the WD. All these skills become much more useful with a larger pickup radius, which by the way we'll be able to increase by 49 yards.
Instead of adding an additional generic effect to this affix I'd like it if they would add passives like this for every class. I think that would be much more interesting.
I like this affix for how it functions. It is useless in true power min/maxing but useful on the convenience side of the house. Seems perfect for the stat pool.
As far as giving it to us as a base ability, I don't care for that much. You should have to "care" about picking up gold and be willing to put in a minimal effort either steering your character over the pile or taking slightly slower killing for easier pick-up.
I think when we see in D3 that gold is functional and has value that it will change how we think about this affix.
The more gold lazy people leave on the ground, the more valuable gold will be
It's running the faucet straight into the sink
Also I find it amusing that in the same day people are complaining about Zombies hitting them from across the screen but whining about how gold wont fly into their characters loot sack from yards away.
Also, too these kids today are so damn lazy. When I played Diablo we picked up all of our gold manually and it didn't even get highlighted by the Alt button. And we could only pile it into neat little 5K stacks, which we had to dump all over town before we went into the dungeon or else we couldn't hold any new loot.
AND WE LIKED IT!
great idea to compare a 12 year old game with a soon to be released one when talking about convenience.
how about in your next mmo/rpg that you might play, you have to sit down and meditate 90sec for your health and power to be back to 100%.
me, personally, i want the game to be a challenge. and i want to have fun.
running back and forth or in circles is neiter one nor the other, and it sure as hell isn't awesome, cause thats what blizzard is always aiming for(tm).
heck, i wouldn't even mind if they decrease amount of gold dropped by 50% if only i don't have to damn touch it in order to pick it up (without having a convenience affix on one of my items equipped).
and just to be clear again:
i don't want increased range on goldpickup as an affix!
i offered different solutions, one would be a pet, the other would be a much higher default range.
how about a timed buff you can buy from the healer in town?
about the usefulness of affixs for your specific character:
there are already enough of them that will render an item next to useless in the worst scenario, and wasting a needed slot for a better affix in the best scenario.
there is no need to have bad affixes in the pool, just so you can enjoy an item even more if you are lucky and didn't get a bad one.
also, i don't agree with goldrange and globepickuprange being on the same affix, just because i want a high autopickuprange for money doesn't neccessarily mean i want all the globes flying towards me for overhealing.
as it has been mentioned, there is indeed a tactical side to globes, and when to choose to pick them up.
also keep in mind that globes are "shared community" loot in D3, so that ranged glasscannon in the back (that is not getting damaged) sucking in all globes at 49yards isn't really helping the tank in melee range.
to be fair, there is a certain range where a globe getting pickedup by one player will also give the healeffect to another player nearby, no idea on the range though.
Yep, I often play in parties and I always got healed when someone on my screen picked up a globe. The radius possibly extends beyond one screen, but it would require cooperation between two people to make sure.
