I hadn't looked too much into the dyes, but with the recent story up top, I decided to look at them a bit. I think it changes the armor enough to make them a cool idea.
Although, Flux (I think it was Flux...) made a good point in the article. Would you guys pay for DLC dyes that added cool effects to your armor? Similar to full IK armor or something? Another one that I think would be cool is having an armor color that has a smoke-like effect coming off it.
Another idea would have a customizable dye. You go onto the site and select the hue and values of the armor/smoke and then you can use that dye one time. Charge $20 for enough dye to do a full armor set. I'd buy the **** out of these.
Black with a redish smoke emitting from it.![]()
They appear to have held back some colors. For instance, there is no black dye. The darkest dye (abyssal) is just a dark grey.
I'm not keen on all these fancy effects on armor dyes. I think just plain colors is a pretty good option already. There's only a few pieces of armor in the game that have any special effect/animation, and I think the WD has them all. I'd be happy if they kept it at that, and I don't see a reason for a dye to give a buff, either. I don't think it should have any kind of gameplay application.
I don't care too much about buffs, but I'd really like to see effects added to dyes. The colors are nice, but adding customization to your armor is always a plus.
Having super rare dyes with particle effects sounds like a fun something for the expansion pack or as rewards for true end-game content releases later on.
Yeah, my original idea was to have them drop at end-game Inferno as item drops. You could trade them like any other items, basically becoming one of the more valuable items in the game.
I just think Blizzard is too greedy and will release this more as a paid DLC. I agree with you, though. If it were added to end game content that would truly be amazing. I remember the IK set particle effects looking cool, and that's 15 years old. They could truly do some amazing things now. I don't understand why they haven't already done it unless, like you're saying, they're saving it for expansions.
According to Bashiok particle effects are not technically possible with their current system. In any case I am not a fan of it either so I am glad itīs not possible. It would disturb my vision too much to see i.e. a barb with pink particle effects all over my screen. The wings are annoying enough as they are hehe :d

i hope no dye ever gets any bonus to it. leave dye as nothing more than a way to be unique. if you start adding stats or whatever to dyes people will all be the same damn color
I'm personally not a fan of the idea of dyes with special effects to them. Personally, I'm concerned that it'd make the armour look too 'noisy' (as if neon pink barbs werent enough :P).
Neon Pink Barbs, with sparkles/rainbows, and strategic use of vanishing dye.
This better happen.
omg i want a neon pink barb with the words "disco stu" flashing on the back
