Rubies damage adding damage to weapons

Do you think it will add to the overall DPS or the base damage?

(I have my own thoughts but want to see what others say first).

It would be more fun but I think it will also look more confusing when your casual player sees the DPS has not increased in his heavy 2H Hammer as much as it has in his friends dagger. It would not seem consistent with the displaying damage as DPS or it favouring faster weapons.

It adding just to weapon dps would take the game a bit too much towards "choose anything, it'll work exactly the same as other choises" Everyone needs to learn about different weapon speeds eventually.

Well by that theory, Amethysts should scale with weapon type. But they do not.

Thats just it though theres seems an imbalance across the board with gems favouring faster base weapons.Maybe I'm thinking too much how it worked in D2 where there were dramatic speed differences between weapons and also faster based weapons would get faster quicker and reach a higher thresholds than slower weapons(think Phaseblade Vs War pike).Maybe max sockets will balance things out.

I guess we will have to see.

Currently the gems definitely seem to favor faster weapons. As do some other affixes. Of course, quite a few skills (when considering resources) favor slower weapons, with only very few skills favoring faster ones, so we'll have to see if this is Blizzard's way for balancing out the faster weapons, or if they'll try go with a more simple and balanced solution. After all, making slower weapons mostly better and then balancing them out with static damage per hit bonuses is going to make balancing slower/faster weapons difficult.

Re: Rubies damage adding damage to weapons

Faster and slower weapons seem to have very different purposes. I don't think they will never be comparable if you try to compare them with same hero builds.

For example if you play wizard and use 1 APS staff it allows you to get rid of all signature spells and use purely AP spenders. That means you need to design your skills and rotations again in fashion that holds synergy with slower the APS.

Making slow weapons viable with all their raw damage disadvantages will take some brain work, but i think they have their own well earned place in the game.

Probably the crit damage gem is the way to go with slow 2 handers.

I think you're missing the point. Slow weapons already have a big damage advantage, and Blizzard seem to try and balance it out by giving modifiers that add flat damage.

This. Let's compare these two weapons of similar quality: 2h mace with 236,2 dps and one hander with 170,4 dps. When dual wielded, the dps of Exalted Grand Crag Hammers only gets boosted to 195 by the 15% dual wield bonus. That leaves a gap of 40 dps to be closed by fast attack synergies. Everything is under control! :-)
