D2 vs D3

Hi all,

Just thought I'd encourage a little debate about D2/D3. Haven't been able to test D3 out, but have a few friends who have. General feelings are mixed... probably 60/40 in favour of D3...

Any thoughts as to which is better?

I heard that Matt Uelman(the genius who composed the music for Diablo 1 and 2 LOD, in case if you didn't know) is gone, and about half of the original staff who've done work on the first 2 games are gone as well. So I seriously can't really imagine Diablo 3 being nearly as good as Diablo 2 LOD with these people being gone. It'll be a good game, because Blizzard just never makes bad games, that I agree with. But, it'll never be able to compare to the legendary Diablo 2 LOD.

And you need to be online at all times, even for single player, and Blizzard can ban you for any reason they like.

Was reading into it a lot at work today (work quiet as well)... find it interesting that some sets still have the same names... lack of cerebral input there... Also, I know D2 is all about item finding and MF... as is D3 to an extent... but I do like the fact that there is still a slight interest end game of occasionally adding the next level on in D2...

From the screenshots I've seen, D3 also looks sort of cartoonish.... a bit like.. say.. final fantasy... I find that a little off-putting. Does anyone agree with this or have I just not seen enough of it yet?

Online for me is not so much of an issue... but I agree with zaphodbrx... It would be nice to be able to take single player with you if you are travelling anywhere. I frequently travel from UK to Europe and it's a great travel companion as I'm away for at least a couple of weeks at a time... so it's back to D2 for that anyway.

D1 is better than D2, hands down. Whether it will be be better than D3, is yet to be seen.

In terms of storyline and atmosphere ,then yes; D1 is x10 times better than D2, but only at that aspect. However, in terms of gameplay and variety, D2 just beats D1 in this aspect. There are many aspects to a game, not only its atmosphere and its storyline.

D2 is functionally a better game in my opinion. Please note that I'm not challenging your manhood if you prefer D3, so you don't need to challenge me to an insult duel.

It basically boils down to this:

If you prefer world of warcraft in its heyday, you will love D3.

If you prefer EQ1 in its heyday, you probably prefer D2.

I loved both games, but I am staggered by all the people that even with the playable beta still swear that D3 will be the deeper game.

Throw out all the insults you want. It's not a question about which is better in some all-encompassing way. Everyone will have a slightly different answer as to why they prefer one or the other. The VAST majority will probably prefer D3.


ADDENDUM: The above doesn't mean I think D3 sucks. It doesn't. If nothing else, its rock solid with Blizzards always exceptional production qualities and lack of bugs (compared to everyone else in the industry). I will absolutely play it and enjoy it. But, I'm not about to throw out my D2 cds.
