In the current Beta build just give her a good weapon, especially a couple of magic 1h crossbows, and she is a monster. I had my reservations at first because in levels 1-5 with a bad weapon it wasn't too fun, but not long after unlocking Hungering Arrow's piercing chance and switching out her bad weapon with a good one and I was mowing down everything.
Objectively (speaking from the experience of a ranged build only, I don't know how its melee plays yet) it plays very nicely with great single target, solid AOE, and the ability to kite bad guys forever between the trapping skill and vault. I'm having a ton of fun with it and will definitely make it my main come release.
I agree and the latest change to Multishot is insane! 40 hatred per use.
I agree, i thought the dh was dull and bland, shoot and roll, whoop de do. I soldiered on and beat the beta with the dh, but so many times i was like, yawn, couldn't wait to get to the end to try something fun, and the WD rocked in comparison.
Currently when playing in groups, I can't see any use in bola shot, and entangling shot (this unless playing in an all ranged characters party) , because they are just too slow for any killing when groups rush foward.
The 1 second delay in bola shot just feels like a very long time....... when playing and the aoe is just too small to justify its use.
I never felt comfortable using Bola Shot either, but I still think it's an amazing skill and it's damage is really good if you don't spam it on one target. Previously I always used it as my generator when the Volatile Explosives rune was available in the beta.
Entangling Shot is a thing of beauty, no matter how I look at it. The base skill does 85% damage per target, so 170% when you have two targets, which is most of the time and it also slows enemies by 60%. With the Chain Gang rune the potential damage increases to 340% and the slow effect will affect 4 targets. Basically it becomes a chain lightning with a slow for free. I never use any other generator in the beta, unless we are talking about the fight against Leoric. I think Entangling Shot shot itself is fine, but the Chain Gang rune could use a slight nerf in damage.
Both of these skills can be used to attack enemies outside your view range, which is made easy by the fact that you can hear the sounds enemies make from farther than you can see. I often killed huge groups of enemies by Entangling Shot without ever seeing them.
The Demon Hunter was a lot of fun to me. My first character will probably be a Demon Hunter or Wizard.
Can any of the other classes cartwheel through the dungeon? I think not!
Fully agree, chain gang is awesome. Best hate builder out there by far. It hits targets otherwise out of range (I think), hits mobs around corners and with 4 or more targets outshines any other hate builder dps wise. I can see the 60% slow work well with other slow effects such as frost or Windforce knockbacks. It will truly rock.
I want to love the DH because I loved the rogue from d1 and the amazon from d2. she is lackluster before 11 or 12 because she has no good AOE skills and bows are hard to get except from the fence.
her resource system feels goofy since you dont really need discipline using defensive skills in act 1.
Her effects aren't as awesome or over the top as the barb or monk or wizard or witch doc. She has the least flashy graphics and effects.
I'm sure she improves as the game goes on, and she's a tie for my starting character, but I'm still a bit disappoint.
Yep, this is another advantage of Entangling Shot, although you do need a target in your line of sight to do this.
Bola Shot is better against tightly grouped enemies, but it also requires more effort if you want to use it optimally. Entangling Shot is the perfect compromise in this regard, because it can be used effortlessly to its full effect. You may lose some damage against tight groups, but you gain a powerful slow, which will actually impede the movement of more enemies than it hits in a huge mob, since enemies won't be able to move as fast toward you behind the slowed targets.
The weapon restrictions definitely hurts a fresh DH more than the other classes. It's the only class that I always kept a good low-level weapon for.
Usually that's the case. Then again sometimes you'll run into an Elite Teleporting Unburied pack on your way to Leoric and you'll spam Caltrops like there's no tomorrow. After level 9, Vault is also an amazing skill to spend your Discipline on.

Playing the beta I found nothing comes close to the raw single target damage output of rapid fire. She could drop 3 of the 4 pillars in 1 rapid shot(in 4 player games)... However DH also had the weakest AOE. I had a lot of fun playing her but I also didn't sit back and kite mobs all day, i did some, but not all day. Instead i tumbled around and picked off key targets while dropping the caltrops to get enimies in a nice clump before drooping them with bola's. She was also the fastest class in the game with vault+passive, meaning she rushed through content the fastest which will continue to be usefull throughout all of the game for hunting champion packs/treasure goblins/finding next exits. I'm sure with more skills her distinct play style will take on a more noticeable form, not to mention harder enemies making you poop yourself everytime they get close to you.
