i thought it was you...
It was me. IIRC I was checking to see if maxed attack speed would help Fend overcome the D/A/E bug. It might have helped but it was not really noticeable to me.
Still, speed = damage over time, something the OP might not have considered.

I tried out the face of horror to get a feel for it. Don't know if charge strike had any noticeable improvement, but fend really sucks with it. The last thing you want when stabbing a bunch of monsters is to have them run away from you.
Attack speed is good, but fend has no problem hitting good breakpoints even with nothing special equipment. Fending with a non shaeled/upped lycander's flank is pretty good, and thats hardly the fastest spear there is.
Edit: A word about Kelpie snare. Kelpie snare is an interesting spear for its slowing ability which is great on bosses. I prefer to put it on merc however as the dmg just isnt there.

You might want to corroborate your findings with these tables. Thanks again Kijya :o)

Thanks, but I am actually using this calculator.
http://diablo2.ingame.de/tips/calcs/...lc_english.php
Considering 30 off-weapon ias ( I intend to use highlords and nosferatu ),
Lycander's flank ( ceremonial pike ): 8/6/11 fend
Arioc's needle ( hyperion spear ): 6/5/9 fend
Viper fork ( mancatcher ): 6/5/8 fend
All without shaels in them or anything else
The middle number is most important as that is used most often.
Viperfork can actually reach 6/4/7 fend but it needs a full 55 off weapon ias to do it, which needs treachery armor.
4 fend is 20% more damage than 5 fend, but Arioc's on the average is already 20% more damaging than viperfork, not even counting 50% deadly strike, +skills, ITD, other gravy. And Arioc's isn't even the best fend spear out there. Not even close.
I would consider viperfork to be a type of 'drunk blizzard employee' item, in line with spire of honor and other wtf uniques.
Okay maybe not that bad, I'll try to do some mfing and find one of these and see how it matches up.
I assume the chance for poison explosion on striking (on viperfork) REQUIRES a corpse to activate? If this is confirmed, then I'm wondering what the "range" is...that is...how far away does a corpse have to be for it to be in "range" of viperfork's striking ability?
I ask becuase whenever I've used the skill on a necromancer in the past, its a target corpse ability so any corpse you can target is fair game. I'm wondering if any corpse on the screen is fair game or even corpses off screen?
*edit*
I do remember playing thru the game with a kelpie snare years ago. And in its defense, upgraded to elite version (on ladder) and a few tweaks in gear choices...it becomes very fun and very viable.

this is cool but if it were something like rik's WW barb guide.. man that is a masterpiece, a joy to look and read
link to that guide?
there's very few spearazon guides out there anyway, infact only one in the sticky ( named 'mellee amazon' ), and it isn't as complete as it could be. Which is a shame, because spearazons are way more viable than people think they are.
Finally got my viperfork from Baal and tried it out.
It's not as bad as I thought, the damage is pretty good for fend and its very fast. It's a real step up from the Lycander's flank that I was using earlier, so I'll probably use it till level 81 when I can equip the arioc's needle.
Re. poison explosion: It seems to target any corpse on my screen. I thought it was targeting the ones closer to my zon but maybe thats just me. In any case its just academic, because even a fully synergized poison explosion of a necro is quite lacking, and this ctc level 9 poison explosion does next to no damage. Now if it were ctc corpse explosion, we'd be talking!
