I have to say that while this is true historically, I find quite a difference today in the products that are marketed generally as Root Beer and Sasaparilla.

Commercial Root Beer such as A&W, Barq's tend to have more of a sweet vanillia flavor in general
Sasaparilla products have a tendance towards more spiced flavorings with anise and nutmeg, etc.
