weapon range is kind of pointless if it's how monsters behave atm.
In the beta if a monster swings at you, even if you are half a screen away it will hit you (so like WOW). It's very hard to duke monsters unless you never get within their hit range in the first place. Also with no % chance to hit, all monsters hit you, it's just your block 20% or % damage reduction that matters. Makes duking and running through bit harder.
Not sure whether there will be proper item range in PVP. PVP is something they have said that is already not important (so they think) so we will see what they do : /
If long range weapons come with some kind of a cost it shouldn't be a problem. And it's not like in D2 where if you spec swords you're stuck with swords forever.
Then again the D3 mechanics don't seem to be implemented in a way that makes weapon range something that is important to have in the game, which is probably why they decided to do without it.
