Im an old player restarting after a 4 year break. I dont know anyone who plays and am dirt poor. (ill be starting a necro fishmancer? Or whatever its called..) with that said, is there an advantage to playing single player over multiplayer? I noticed a lot of annoying spamming online so far. Besides someone rushing you and playing with friends... is one faster or easier? What do you prefer?
Well like you said multiplayer you can get rushes and stuff which makes it faster, and you can get help when you need it. However, single player has a few things going for it.
1. Maps are saved, so you can run areas much quicker.
2. You can change the number of players in the game which increases drops and experience.
3. No spammers
I play multiplayer, but its to each his own. There are certainly advantages to both, it depends on what you like doing in the game.
To add:
You can also use a muling utility to easily transfer and store gear.
You can also MP with people over tcp/IP if you want.
There is an awesome community here of people who play single player, so if you go that route stop by the single player forum sometime!
To me pandemonium event is the biggest reason to play online, that and it keeps me honest (no nagging little temptation to use an editor).

I made the jump to Single Player when the first ladder season of the 1.10 patch ended, and have never regretted it. No lag or interrupted connections, unlimited stashes, the /players X command, not having to worry about getting bumped to nonladder - I vastly prefer the SP experience.

Multiplayer till i die or loose my connection.
Single player would be more fun if you don't have anyone to play with, of course.
It's much more fun with more people though, and you get the option to trade for things you want, rather than having to actually grind to find.
SP has MP side of things...so there are always people to play with.
