It matters because items in this game are somewhere between Path of Exile (where pretty much anything can be turned into anything else) and the D2 system. This ability to break down, modify, and reconstruct almost everything injects a huge amount of unpredictable human behavior into what would otherwise be somewhat predictable.
we've gone pretty far off topic here... anyways, i still think that it doesn't really matter. i think bliz is going for:
1 - build a model and set rates (of drops, of material breakdowns, of crafting prices, of gold sinks, etc)
2 - make sure no one ****s with the system
3 - correct any errors or adjust if needs be after adequate observation
also i never said they wont watch everything and follow the data they get closely, i said they would build it right and there will be few surprises that would necessitate action on their side on a micro (specific item drops) level.
