Completely new to these forums, very impressed with the community here. I've been lurking for a couple of weeks...
So I just started playing D2 randomly (Torchlight wasn't cutting it and D3 isn't out yet) and I find I'm a pack rat. So any purpose to all these characters I have full of rares? I just keep stashing them away lol. Figured I'd do more killing if I stopped muling so much random stuff if there is no point to it all (and that will help a lot if I'm still playing after Sept 24 on the new ladder season)
I have no idea what any of them are, I see rare, doesn't help my sorc, mule it without another look... lol... *sigh* I a terrible packrat disease don't I? Prob caught it from smashing and digging around in all those rats' nests...
Thank you for you time,

Welcome to the forums! Glad you decided to join!
So you played torchlight before D2? That's funny.
Rares aren't always that useful, but it takes a bit of experience to learn whats good and what's garbage.
well, there are guides around that tell you how to estimate rares/at least identify the useless ones (unfortunately i cant show you one, as i usually refer to a german guide). then you could go to the trade values section with the rest and ask if they are of any value
Thank you for the information. I don't know what I'll do when the ladder resets, for now I've switched over to playing in single player, hoping to get a friend in there with me too. Perhaps I'll try to insert myself into your single player community. I do enjoy the smoothness of single player compared to the battle-net and its seemingly random lag spikes.
Thanks again,

Honestly, the vast majority of rares are Charsi fodder.
I am a pack rat too. Anything that is yellow or gold in color gets stashed away. I am not sure why, but that is what I do. I would like to make a run through with each character type, so I save everything in case that other character class needs it.
The thing that I like about this game is that you can do whatever you want. If you want to fight the same monster 200 times in a row, you can. If you want to fight everyone once, you can do that too. I can't believe I just found this game a month ago. Wow, I missed out on 10 good years of playing this...
Try to learn what good stats are on em
Helps to kinda lurk around the trade forums to get a grasp on what is worth what. From there you can decide what to look for and to keep. The trade forums have all kinds of sage advice to dish out.
For melee weapons, look for combinations of
High base damage
High enhanced damage (very important)
high elemental damage (not as great but still helpful)
Increased attack speed (very important, the more the better)
+ to max damage/Attack rating
Life/Mana Leech
Also if an item is ethereal, the self repair mod is very nice.
For wands/orbs/scepters etc, look for
+ to all sorceress/necromancer/paladin skills
Faster Cast rate
+ to good skills, such as lightning/chain lightning/bone spear/bone spirit/blessed hammer
+ to life or mana
There are too many things to list, 98% of the rares you find are probably useless, but some can be ok for early-mid game, and some can be great late in game.

Dominatus, I prefer Single Player play myself. Are you using ATMA or GoMule? Unlimited stashes alone are reason enough to play SP, in my opinion.
