    General Introduction Guide

    Here is a portal to anything Diablo (except perhaps Hellfire). [laughters]

    The first element for one to get acquainted with might be the official readme file.

    More specifically, its introduction, "a Quick Note from the Designers," then its first chapter, "Hints, Tips & Tactics."

    In a modern world, the best thing to learn first is how to render the game runnable under Linux.

    First off, the latest VirtualBox should be downloaded and installed, then those three dynamic-link libraries should be extracted to the main game folder.

    general > advanced > untick "show toolbar in fullscreen;"

    audio > host driver > alsa; network > bridged adapter;

    select windows as the installation media, then install;

    install guest additions, then enable their offered graphics capabilities;

    every time one restarts the virtual machine, consideration should be given to:

    cut down host resolution (integer-value native division; aspect-ratio maintenance)
    through its system settings (useful for cases in which the resolution is of 640*480);

    switch to fullscreen mode through holding down the host key, then pressing the f one;

    disable mouse integration through holding down the host key, then pressing the i one;
    It is to be noted, though, that one needs a powerful-enough computer for this to be working smooth (anything ranging from Intel "Core 2s" to current-generation processors should be fine, though);

    The outlined packet-wrapping-implementation processus provides the platform from which any combination of virtual and actual machines can be connected together, right from default Windows-XP configurations, bare obvious modifications, such as positively answering to the firewall prompt. Be warned that packet wrapping has to be implemented on every side, and that the main-executable checksums should be matching.

    In case one desires to transfer their stuff from one character to another through legitimate and classic means, it is possible to connect two virtual machines from the same host together. This can be accomplished by either cloning the main entertainment virtual machine to a secondary, transferring-purposes virtual one, or creating the latter anew (in the case where there has been clone processing, a new MAC address has to be generated for the cloned machine, and a new computer name should be chosen for it, too), then having them both running at the same time, connected through the game. (Secondary-virtual-machine audio in the settings page should be set to "disabled.")

    Using these configuration-protocol, up to four actual and virtual machines can be connected together, even through a combination of wired and wireless network adapters, and interact while in the game, and that, running whichever host operating system one desires to.

    For it to be noted, installing the guest additions may, as a step, not be that necessary. It is mainly useful for files to be transferred to and from the host machine using the folder-sharing technology instead of the removeable-media one, or even of the Internet one. For example, for Diablo or StarCraft save-game backups. The fourth step may, for the sake of simplicity, therefore be skipped as one wills.

    Finally, it occurred to me that some resolutions might be lacking in the "displays" tab of the Oneiric Ubuntu-distro release. As a solution to this, one may run the "xrandr" command through the terminal to set host-side double guest scaling; "xrandr -s 960x540" (from 16:9 1080p) for example.

    Furthermore, virtual machines can be started through the terminal using the "vboxmanage startvm machine-names" command; "vboxmanage startvm vm1 vm2; xrandr -s 960x540," followed by "xrandr -s 1920x1080; exit" at the end of a gaming session to restore the native monitor resolution and then exiting the terminal, can, for example, be used as a combination.

    title: untouched

    one can tell whether their characters have or not been damaged through the following formulas:
    (keep in mind that one does not gain life, nor mana, with the attaining of their fiftieth level)

    warrior:

    life = 2·vitality + 2·clvl + life(items) + 18
    mana = 1·magic + 1·clvl + mana(items) - 1

    rogue:

    life = 1·vitality(base) + 1.5·vitality(difference) + 2·clvl + life(items) + 23
    mana = 1·magic(base) + 1.5·magic(difference) + 2·clvl + mana(items) + 5

    (difference refers to the base statistic subtracted from the now one)

    sorcerer:

    life = 1·vitality + 1·clvl + life(items) + 9
    mana = 2·magic + 2·clvl + mana(items) - 2

    title: hints

    this game is best played on a local-area network, together with people one knows can be cooperative.

    the date should be set to a year between 1996 and 2038 for random level generation to be working as it should.

    for a character to avoid permanent life and mana reductions, both fascinating, ornate, and sacred shrines, together with cauldrons and goat shrines (random-effect shrines), and black deaths (findable in levels three to five) should like the plague be avoided.

    it should also be noted that treasures which are among the greatest are to be found in the hottest places. however, this is but a general rule, and exceptions do exist -- for example, the meat-covered helm of spirits.

    title: ironman

    three characters -- one of each class -- have to be created. the use of fresh characters is important, as it is required to benefit from the hidden, first-session, class-dependent shield-blocking bonuses. the join order -- important as it influences monster targeting choices -- may best be from warrior to sorcerer. interaction with townsfolk is permitted, but only at the start, since once the town floor is left, foot can never be set back on it -- that is, townsfolk are to be bidden farewell to. the only acceptable way of taking any set of stairs is moving downwards -- which means, conceiving town as "level 0," that level numbers are to be increased, without any room for alternatives -- such as restarting in town, or entering town portals -- to this fundamental rule. the party therefore survives using only what is to be found in the dungeon -- its ultimate goal being to venture as deep as possible into its labyrinths -- at least until having exhausted all reasonable means of continuing. useful tactics include grouping, resource conservation, and the sound application of class-specificities knowledge -- for example, a proper focus on respective-class assets increases the overall effectiveness of the party; the same applies when each of its members is well aware of what is expected of them. effective communication is also -- indeed -- an integral part of most ironman successes.

    title: backups & miscellaneous technical information

    Install Diablo, patch to v1.07, then crack using releases either from NeCr0s, shadowRUNNER, or EVC (all are patching up to the same checksum if I remember correctly). Remember to keep the mpq file from the official disc.

    In order to perform backups, paste the following into a batch file, which is to afterwards be ran:
    @echo %computername% > pc-name.txt
    @xcopy "%systemroot%\dlinfo_*.drv" "%cd%" /h
    @attrib -s -h "%cd%\dlinfo_*.drv"
