In some form or another, because the team has been backsliding like mad.
[BLUE="http://forums.battle.net/thread.html?topicId=27813861152&pageNo=1&sid=3000# 3"]We've always been trying to see if we can create a better system than town portals, making waypoints the main travel back to town mechanic. But, it's looking like it's just simply more fun and a quality-of-life-nicety to be able to jump back to town from anywhere even if waypoints are all over the place. Plus it's not really that hard to avoid the few pitfalls that TPs in Diablo II had. [/BLUE]
edit, scrolls of wealth are gone, too.

Also I never said you can just use them anywhere anytime as much as you want.[/BLUE]

*Mind blown*
I don't know if this is good or bad...
I'm indifferent. I didn't really care that they took them out (although I'd have missed the TP sound).
Scrolls of wealth are gone, too.
Unexpected.........
They've been hinting at it for a while now, and it's not the first time they've gone back and put in something from D2 saying it wouldn't be in D3.
Reading the thread is annoying. Why can't Bashiok give us details??????????
For my part, I though the reasons for taking it out - ie. how TPs removed so much challenge - were very exciting and promising. I hope they still have those reasons very much in mind. (I fear they don't.)
Haha.
Reading a Bashiok thread is always like that. He is overjoyed whenever he has the chance to be the textbook definition of vague.
Well we all knew they could fix the issues that plagued Town Portal's design, we just didn't know if they wanted to spend the time doing it. One way with a casting time, would just about fix it.
Awesome! I am happy about this. The only major pitfall was boss healing but it wasnt detrementil to the game by any means. I am happy about this, being able to go back to the safe town at any time is a huge win.
