The synopsis reads like a train wreck but it is Neal Stephenson we are talking here, so I'm guessing the book's going to be very good.
It's one of the ones that kind of put him on the map... so yeah. Eclectic, but I like him better than Phillip Dick - no way I can see to make a movie out of it though, whereas Dick's used for lots of scripts.

I thought Zodiac by Him would make a great movie.

Just finished Footfall - can't recall if I'd read it before.

I enjoyed Footfall a great deal. Some lovely ideas in it plus some good old fashioned "we'll just invent our way to victory!".

I think my favourite touch was when the journalist met the survivalist outside of Seattle. That really turned the expected sub-plot development right on its head.

You mean the unexpected murder? I liked it - shows the authors recognize just how much moronic fluff will be ejected from society when the SHTF.

Yep, it was a moment where you say, "That would happen. That really would happen."
No fuss, no muss, just straight-ahead logical plot development that was utterly surprising by reason of being simply sensible.

Oh my word. That doesn't work.
The times books are returned that have some form of waterdamage.....and students hoping I don't notice. But I'm a hag, and a book sorceress, so I see it and will charge them.
