How to deal with Diablo's firestorm

Maybe he doesn't like it to be sacrificed that easily because he can be resurrected for just 50k.

I for myself find it annoying if the merc dies in the mid of something for which a merc is mandatory.

This is the part where you wish your merc could wear boots so you can slap the most primitive unique Boots on him to great effect...

I'm a little late to the party but... Firestorm, really? Your merc must be naked and 30 levels below you if he's getting killed by D's firestorm.

More useful: Maybe reaper's toll and/or slow from something else will cause him to use his elemental attacks less.

Anytime the merc dies short of right before a duel I'm annoyed =P. Ok, unless it's the free A1 rogue. She may look better, but she gives no Aura.

Actually she does, she looks into the hearts of the monsters wants to eat her heart out before shooting them to death (aka Inner Sight), if you want to count that as an 'Aura' of sorts...

My merc is 89, same as me, with 90 res all. No other elemental attack in the game does noticeable damage to him. None of D's other attacks, including the lightning, move his health bar whatsoever, but Firestorm kills him instantly from time to time. Seems to be a positioning thing.

It's like the merc is sitting in the perfect spot for Firestorm to hit him multiple times per tick instead of just once, or something. So once in a while, instead of ignoring the Firestorm, he dies instantly.

you could stick a vampgaze on it. The MDR should be enough.

MDR comes into play before resists, so it might not be enough. I have no first-hand experience, however.

diablo's firestorm is a whole bunch of little damages per frame, making integer mdr and absorb an easy counter.

According to the wiki, each fire deals (24-32) - (62-76) damage, with 10-30 of them. Vampire Gaze has 10-15 MDR, i.e. it reduces damage by 1/3. That's a usable amount, but not a life saver. You can add e.g. Gladiator's Bane or Griswold's armor with Mal runes, however.
