I wouldn't say that, steelshade isn't terrible, its just that you've got so many better alternatives.

Removing merc's weapon before D is one option, that way D probably attacks you. Merc is usually quite useless anyway while killing Dia, so removing his weapon don't affect your killing speed.

For example I remove harmony bow from my merc before Dia or otherwise she get killed everytime.
Not sure if removing insight works, never tried. At least removing weapon works if weapon gives lots of elemental damage.

Steelshade is one of the most terrible uniques in the game (if not the most terrible one), in particular for mercs. For them, it has nothing useful but a bit of fire absorb.

Oh whoops, mixed it up with stealskull. Yep, totally agree with you there, and the fire absorb itself doesn't have enough impact to justify it.

GA and Crown of Thieves would be the better combo. All he needs is fire protection. The lightning hose will miss in melee (except in normal mode).

Well its not that hard to get gold to buy your merc back. I think more than enough gold can be obtained since you can sell certain items that are useless for 35k gold. So tell me what is the big deal resurrecting your merc?

It's still better than just staying dead.
