I was just talking about spelling, not about speaking or language structure or grammar. German spelling is far easier than English. There is much variety in English pronounciation, but there are a couple of contradictions in spelling and a general lack of consistent rules. For example, when reading the word sword, how can you know how to pronouncs its sw if you didn't know it yet? Which rule makes it different from the sw in let's say swan, swim, swindle or sworn?

Sword: Language is what's spoken, not what some grammar book, dictionary or professors in ivory towers might try to tell you.

In particular Germans over-pronounciate the w, I guess. In German, w is spoken like v in English and v like f. The w is called double-u in English for a reason :azn:

When was the last English spelling reform? Has there ever been one? In the last 100 years? What about my list of sw words in which the vowels are pronounced in the same manner (AFAIK) but written in several different ways?

The German spelling reform didn't change that much about German. I guess most changes went unnoticed out of German speaking countries. With respect to what I mentioned, it only applies to the ß issue. Before that, it could sometimes appear after short vowels as well. Whatever, I ignore half of the spelling reform, including the more consistant use of ß, even though I regard it as reasonable. I simply feel no need to change. If it's easier to learn, then it's fine, but I've already learned it... the old way.

It should be "he who is", not "him who is". A good way to check is by stripping the sentence down to its simplest form. So you wouldn't say "him is". You would say "he is". Sorry for adding to all the hate, Krischan! Bilingualism is impressive, but I imagine it must be hard.

Edit: I was assimilated into French Immersion in high school, and I rebel against it by striving to do better in English and only being able to talk like a cave man in French.

Seriously: Maybe you are right, but I'm not convinced yet. "It is him/her/(accusative pronoun)" is a exception of "it is ..." sentence usually coming with nominative (an oddity which is found in a couple of Northern German languages and dialects as well BTW). So this exception has another exception when the pronoun comes with a subordinate clause?
