Only vertebrates are protected, while you can do what you want with all the other animals (apart from the question of damaging property of others).

Killing animals or letting them suffer isn't allowed if it's not made for an acceptable reason. So if Pokemon are vertebrates, is there a good reason to treat Pokemon in that manner?

To give you an idea of what's acceptable: It's perfectly legal to do things like putting pigs into a car and crashing them into a wall at 100mph, to check protective measures or lack thereof.
