I know very little about Paladins and my experience with them consists of a Frost Zealot I took untwinked in HC. That is my ONLY Paladin experience besides partying with them from time to time. My question to you is, what Paladin build should I go with?
My MF char is a Meteorb Sorc so I am not in need of a MF Hammerdin, although I would not be opposed to trying one. Alternatively, since joining SP recently, I do not have a melee character at the moment. The Meteorb Sorc is the only char as of yet. I have searched through the Paladin build guides but I thought I would ask some experienced Paladin players out there what they might suggest?
I do have quite a bit of other higher end gear as well so any build suggestions with the exception of ultra godly runeword based items is acceptable.
Your list of gear is pretty well adaptable to any paladin build, so you're going to get some general suggestions. Personally, I'd go with Fanatic Zealot... it's melee based. Don't upgrade your Guardian Angel... it's better off left as an Exceptional. Curse you for getting the Herald... it's one of the five items left on my grail and I just know it's never going to drop for me.
I vote for a Tesladin variation.
"Crescent Moon" Phaseblade (Shael-Um-Tir) with a Guardian Angel and HoZ will get you far.
One of the builds i have in mind in the near future.
@Shagsbeard: Have you tried running an LK map with an armor rack that consistently drops Gilded Shields? I'm a fairly new player and HoZ was one of my first big finds--and that's how I found it.
@QED: I think Tesladin, Freezealot, and Fanatic are all good. I'm trying Tesladin first and I'm very happy with it, though he's on hold in NM right now because (for fun) I want to play him through as much of the game as possible with a Crescent Moon phase blade. I have a 3os phase blade but still need the Um. You have an Um, so I know what I'd do if I were you. But the other damage auras are also good.
back@Rhone: I tend not to "exploit" mechanics like this... not that I haven't done similar things from time to time. But once I classify something as an oversight, or mistake on the parts of the programers, I tend to avoid using that if possible. Play the game the way you like to though... I'm not saying you shouldn't. It's just my way of keeping the challenge level up.
Heh, when I found mine I was just looking for a pally shield with high resists for Spirit--I had no idea one of those racks could drop an HoZ. But I completely understand your position, and the idea of playing the game in the way that's most fun and satisfying for you.
You seem to have the basics for nearly all paladin builds except for a high damage melee weapon (the Baranar would do fine, but it's ethereal so I wouldn't rely on it), so I'd suggest one of the two elemental variants of the Zealot too, either Holy Shock or Holy Freeze. There are good guides for both available, check them and see what suits your playstyle better. Good luck!
Wow thanks for the responses. After checking out your responses and doing some research, I've narrowed down the build to the following three...
1. TeslaFroster
2. Charger
3. Hammerdin
The Hammerdin is SO overdone and would be another MF runner. I don't really need that. The idea of Charging my way through the game sounds challenging but a) I would probably go with a big ED/CB 2-handed weapon so the shield would not be used and b) I might get frustrated Charging everywhere as this is my second Paladin ever. With that being said, the TeslaFroster sounds like fun. I will follow the guide below with some of my own twists.
Weapon: Crescent Moon (I have the runes and the phase blade ready to go)
Weapon switch: Voice of Reason (I need the Ko rune)
Shield: Herald of Zakarum
Shield Switch: ? (pain in the butt to switch to HOZ)
Armor: Guardian Angel
Helm: ?
Gloves: Draculs
Boots: Gore Riders
Belt: Nosferatu's Coil
Amulet: Metalgrid (could have fun with the lvl 22 Iron Golem charges)
Ring: Raven Frost
Ring: ?
Charms:
Combat Skiller
Offensive Skiller
Small str and dex charms for requirments
Obviously I will max Holy Shock, Holy Freeze, Resist Lightning, and Resist Cold. A few points into Zeal and maybe 1 point into Holy Shield? Will my gear/dex be enough to help me make max block? I can always play and see how it goes.
Suggestions for a helm? Guillaume's Face might not be the best because I won't be relying on CB as much. Maybe try gambling a +2 Paladin Circlet with mods?
