Guardian#6: buraz, the Random Tourney Power Strike/Plague Javelin Amazon

    May I introduce to you:

Guardian buraz, the Random Tournament Amazon!

I’ll start with the important part:

    Stats & Skills:
    Character name : buraz
    Character type : Hardcore Amazon
    Character level : 83
    Character exp : 937998145

    Strength : 106
    Energy : 15
    Dexterity : 151
    Vitality : 221
    Stat Points Rem : 12
    Skill Points Rem: 21

    Life : 965 / 877
    Mana : 154 / 137
    Stamina : 367 / 367

    Resists: 57/70/75/75 (Fire/Cold/Lightning/Poison)

    LCS main weapon
    LCS weapon switch
    Mercenary

    Plague Javelin 20
    Power Strike 20
    Valkyrie 20
    Evade 3
Impale, Fend 1 (never used those…quite the investment )
All prereqs 1, not usable (except for Jab)

You’re probably thinking: OMG!!!!111!1! Why did he choose these skills? And you are sooo right...well, as stated in the title, this Guardian was made in the Random Tournament.

    Rules in short:
Someone randomly rolls you the equipment and skills you are allowed to use.
    Equipment:
    - For each piece of Armor (Body, Helmet etc.) one roll is made to determine which item you may use.
    - You may choose a weapon type (e.g. Swords) and 2 weapons are rolled from this type (e.g. Short Sword and Flamberge).
    - You may only use these base types and their exceptional/elite counterparts.
    - 1 re-roll allowed for any one armour piece, 1 for any one weapon.

    Skills:
    - You’ve got 8 rolls for your skills.
    - Minimum per skill tree: 1
    - Maximum per skill tree:5
    - 1 re-roll allowed

It all started with me choosing to roll these skills:
    5 Javelin&Spears, 2 passive, 1 Bow

As you can see, I was obviously aiming for Lightning Fury…well, here’s what I got:

    11. level 77, Hell Tamoe Highland next.
    12. blevel 77, Hell Act II next.
    13. level 79, Hell Lost City next.
    14. level 80, Hell Arcane Sanctuary next.
    15. level 81, Hell Outer Steppes next.
    16. level 82, Hell Bloody Foothills.
    17. level 83, Hell Nihlatak next.
    18. level 83, Hell Baal next.
    19. Guardian buraz, the Random Amazon, and Leharas, the Might Desert Mercenary, level 83, accompanied by a level 27 Valkyrie.

    Gameplay:
Okay, I have to admit: it was terrible. Well, okay, not terrible, but slow. Very slow (look at my damage numbers…). Since I couldn’t deal that much damage, most of the time I was simply standing back and throwing in a Plague Javelin from time to time for good measure. This way the character was a very safe build, and I had almost no NDEs.

What I noticed is the huge damage increase above level 20 in Plague Javelin, that’s why I decided to ditch my MF gloves late in Hell for +3 Javelin gloves. I elected not to use The Eye of Etlitch and instead used the Teleport amulet, which saved me from dying more than once (well, more than fifty times actually…). It was probably the most important item for me in order to get buraz to Guardian.

My weapon switch proved to be indispensible in late Hell because of the IAS and inherent lightning damage…PIs or even PI/Poison Immune monsters were far too common and my merc did only some lousy 5-30 fire damage with his Insight Partizan. And Hone Sundan and Woestave also don’t do non-physical damage, and since my stash can’t hold an infinite number of items, I didn’t have a weapon with high non-physical damage at my hands (besides: I didn’t find one).

There were times when gameplay was so slow I almost wanted to kill her just to roll up another character…but then I thought about buraz and how sad he would be if his godchild died…and instead I decided to skip full clears in Hell. That was a huuuge relief.

Synergised and with a better backup attack than Power Strike, this build is very well Hell viable and pretty safe. I had around 300 MF most of the time simply because I needn’t engage in melee combats at all. If I had had better skills, I might even have sticked to MF gear, but as it was progress would have been way too slow. The Valkyrie could take some beating, but even with Might the damage on P1 was barely enough to stop monsters from regenerating…so I always had to position her and my merc the right way: Valkyrie in front, merc right behind her stabbing at the same monster.

    Noteable finds
    Gul Rune
    Lum Rune from Hell HF
    Perfect Hone Sundan
    Sazabi’s Ghost Liberator
    Mentalist’s GC
    Ruby SC of Balance (11%/5%)

    Credits
buraz, for rolling me this character! Even if gameplay was slow, I enjoyed it most of the time
Vang, for hosting another great tournament!
jiansonz, even if you weren’t in this tourney, for offering advice and so much insight whenever it comes to untwinked HC play – I learnt so much the last 3 years from simply reading your progress posts!
The SPF folks – I’d have stopped playing D2 by now if it wasn’t for you guys and gals!

    Note
Yeah, I know that my last Guardian Thread said “Guardian #4“ and this one says “#6“…in between I guardian’d my SPF Ladder Hammerdin, but since he’s pretty standard except being untwinked and finding 10% of my grail, I never posted a Guardian Thread.

Re: Guardian#6: buraz, the Random Tourney Power Strike/Plague Javelin Amazon

    Congrats Grisu

All untwincked Guardians are special, and these with so many restrictions deserves even more applause...

Although i did not read whole progress yet, i surely want to do it lately...

Nice work and very good writeup...

    Good luck with next ones

Congratulations Grisu! Awesome work under those restrictions.

Some nice rings for the job you've got there. Did they provide enough FCR though? The Teleport would still be deathly slow methinks, though it obviously was still useful. .

A shame you did not use Impale though. *hides*

Nice job! I especially like your Artisan's Gothic Shield of Deflecting!

Well, well, commenting on the restrictions of my char and then you come up with something like this. Doesn't seem to be the easiest of tournaments either. All in all a great job.

Just like NagisaFurukawa i'm curious about the teleporting. With that little FCR it seems like slow teleing.

Thank you, RIP! I doubt I'll be doing another character in this Random Tourney though

Thanks and lol I didn't do nearly enough physical damage to make use of Impale, Fend or Jab. Since my merc did enough physical damage, I decided to specialise on non-physical damage instead. Next time I'll do an Impalazon

Heh - haven't thought it would make it till Guardian, but I didn't find/gamble/shop/cube anything better and the resists were needed

I guess I had the advantage of being actually able to deal almost significant damage. Esp PIs weren't such a problem to me as they probably were to you

I was teleporting at 17 frames, so it was indeed very slow. But I didn't use it as an escape tool per se, but rather as a tool to prevent those escape situations...
like "oh, there is a Fana boss pack of Frenzytaurs charging in at me...*teleport*".

Worked better than "Engage those Fana Frenzytaurs *chop* *whop* *3 HPs left* *trying to Teleport with 17 frames* *your deeds will be remembered*"

Good job and lots of respect for the patience, even if this was the case:

As my only tournament guardian so far skipped full clears from A1 Normal to AV Hell

And just a thought on the teleporting topic: isn`t running with some speed boots on a better way to avoid monsters than teleporting so slowly?

    Grisuuuuuuuuu!

Nice work, I like that you used teleport. I find it to be a pretty good way of positioning the moron and the even more stupid summons. Your damage numbers doesn`t look that bad to me, although Power Strike doesn`t exactly look like a power house.

Good luck with your next project

Although it sounds like (I admit, I didn't read the whole thread) you didn't use it all that much so it prolly wasn't a big deal. Plus with this being an untwinked tourney you may not have even had the chance. And I just noticed the ilvl 84, so you probably didn't find it until very late in Hell anyways. LoL.

Nevertheless, your Amazon with non uber itamz using non uber skills just made Guardian. This makes the fact that my last new character (softcore) actually got killed by Corpsefire, in Normal difficulty, all the more embarassing. Masterfully done, hero.

Well, basically yes. But in places where you don't have much space (Crystalline Passage and the like), it's just awesome when you can Teleport over a river for example and start your assault from there
Also, it's much better for repositioning you merc and Valkyrie (badly needed...)

Thanks! I really wonder what Blizzard thought when they created Power Strike...CS and Lightning Strike each deal 1 to ~370 damage per bolt(7)/hit(21) at level 20 without synergies, while PS deals 1-680 damage at level 20...they could at least have added some IAS to it...

But it's not that bad It was enough to kill PIs in hell (even if it lasted some minutes...)

I didn't have Amn or Shael Runes left when I found the Hone Sundan in Act V Hell, but that was ok, since basically I only used it against The Ancients, some bosses and Baal. The Insight Partizan simply did more damage (thus more leech for my merc) and allowed me to regenerate much faster, so that was my weapon of choice

Nevermind about Corpsefire - I killed my first HC character at Rakanishu's... It's simply a matter of playstyle - once you get accustomed to playing HC, you hardly ever die to those standard situations.

In SC, I was often like "ah well, only 10% health left, but I'll get a level soon - skip that potion". In HC it's more like "Wahhhh! Only 60% health left!!!" *gulp, gulp*
