    BEST weapon/armor for act 2 merc

    so im more so looking towards the runewords since im guessing those are the best weapons.. i was thinking for weapon

    Breath of the Dying weapon and ???

    for the armor maybe stone or ??

    (BTW this is for a MF sorc thats speced in meteor and frozen orb)


    opinions please!

    (edit -i know this is for single player mode im just trying to make this guy my MF sorc and i want to be able to beat the game with this character too so whatever armor you think is good let me know)

    'Breath of the Dying' Elite Polearm
    'Fortitude' Armor
    Guillame's Face with 40/15 or Andariel's Visage with 40/15

    If you're after a set-up that will also support your MF Sorceress:

    If you are looking for realistic, legitimate gear, one of my standard setups in Tal Rasha's Crest for the life leach, Shaftstop for the Damage Reduction, and a Reaper's Toll for the Decrepify. I'll swap in an ethereal, upgraded Kelpie Snare to go up against Baal.

    A noble goal. Please don't get too discouraged when I tell you that it will, almost certainly, take you several years of dedicated play before you are likely to have the runes for a Breath of the Dying.

    The good news is that, while it is insanely powerful, it is also completely unnecessary in order to dominate Hell.

    no problem i wont, then if you will list the more realistic items then i would appreciate it very much.

    I personally love the following set up for my MF'ing dual-tree sorcs (primarily cold/fire, with cold primary):

    Head: Eth, Um'd Andarial's Visage (prior to that, Vamp Gaze)
    Body: Eth, Um'd Guardian Angel
    Weapon: Eth, Upped, Amn'd Kelpie Snare

    With that, he's got 90 res in poison/fire (both of which are dangerous elements from Baal's minions), and with advanced levels will have mid-80's resists for cold/lightning. The Kelpie absolutely shuts down Baal. I find that using this for my level 93 Blizz-baaler (currently running efficiently in Baalathon) that he rarely dies and can handle CI Lister effectively when necessary. When leveling, I usually go with a Prayer merc using insight. I only switch to the Baaling merc setup in the mid-eighties when I start getting serious about running baal.

    Of course, if I were running a different target, the setup would be completly altered. For Pits, I'd probably focus on damage reduction (archer protection) and insight, for Meph, I'd just leave him dead. For AT, I'd focus less on leach (too many undeads).

    As stated it depends what you need him to do. For general questing I normally use insight on my merc in an eth polearm. I have one made in an eth partizan and an eth cryptic axe. I know for Baal running eth up'ed kelpie snare is great.

    Helms: Tal rasha's, wormskull, stealskull, crown of thieves are the cheap starter helms followed by the following depending on need:
    Vampire gaze: Good DR and life leach
    Andy's with resists rune/jewel: Nice IAS, lifesteal
    Dilerium runeword: Great crowd control
    Guiliams face: Crushing blow for boss killing

    Armour:
    Cheapies: Duriels shell is great as is any armour with good resists like goldskin, lionheart, skin of the vipermagi etc
    Decent: Your Um level runewords like Duress, Treachery etc for what they are good for. Eth shaftstop also shines due to 30% DR. Good for areas with hard hitting physical monsters like archers in the pit etc. Gaurdian angel is great for resists issues. Should be socketed with resist jewel or Um.
    Top range: Something like Fortitude or Chains of Honour.

    Weapons: Damage is key unless you are hitting act bosses when monster slow takes over as the most important mod. There are plenty good runewords like Insight, Honour, etc. Also good are your reapers, hone sundan, demonsarch etc. There are lots of good polearm and spear class weapons to choose from.

    In general I cater the equipment for the area. For pits where archers are the issue for the merc I go shaftstop, vampiregaze and a big damage polearm (insight in my case). For Baal I am more worried about resists due to the big poison and fire damage that always kills him in the waves so there I may go with Gaurdian angel and a resists helm to get the 90% resists and swap in Kelpie for killing Baal from my damage weapon. See what works for you. Here is my equipment for running AT with my Blizzard sorc and Holy freeze merc:

    This merc setup is designed for durability (good life steel and 8% DR), strong crowd control (Holy Freeze), My mana issues (Insight), and mostly kill speed when cold immune bosses spawn (big damage and IAS). He can kill most non PI bosses quickly on P5 with some help from static field. There are only two elemental damage types to worry about in AT. Poison and Lightning from horror mages. This setup gives me 75 Light resists and 85 poison which leaves him very strong against those two damage types.

    Since it's for sorcs, I'd go with a strong insight for normal questing, or a reaper's toll for crowd control if mana is not an issue. As with the other's advice, I also switch to kelpie's for Baal. I know that reaper's decrep slow baal as well, and if I'm not mistaken act bosses has a 50% slow cap, which means that decrep and kelpie slow baal the same amount, but decrep also reduces his damage and amplifies the damage he takes... But in practice, reaper's might miss a few times(during which Baal might tele...), and kelpie's takes care of Baal in a much more consistent way.
    Guardian Angel is a good choice for resists, as your merc will have high base resist at higher levels, and you'll only need to socket an um/res jewel on your armor and helm to allow him to hit the 90 cap. Fort is good for extra damage. As for helms, andy's are good if you can cover the -fire res, or guillaume's for boss killing.
    All in all, I'd probably go for reaper's + um'd guillaume's+ um'd guardian angel for good survivability, damage, and crowd control.

    As for the BotD... well, it's not entirely impossible, but it take a LOT of dedication. With 5-6 friends helping you and about 5 hours of HF rushing a day, you should be able to cube one up within 2 months. I really wouldn't recommend it though,especially for a merc weapon xD

    I'd wouldnt think about this as "What is the best weapon for an act 2 merc?", but as "What is the best merc weapon for my character?". I always make the decicion based on what my character needs and very, very rarely focus on improving the mercs own killing power. If my weapon of choice also improves his killing power, the better, though. The helmet and armor slot are used to compensate what the weapon doesn't offer.

    My usual weapon choices are Insight for spellcasters, Reaper's Toll for melee characters and Kelpie Snare when fighting bosses. Rest of the various weapons don't really interest me with, with the expection of Infinity.
