Eschew obfuscation!
I almost died to a FE zombie a few minutes ago. I was running the NM Catacombs with my new classic orber (level 34) and was killing everything in sight with one or two orbs. I entered one of the side rooms and cast a couple orbs at a normal looking group of zombies . . . but then one of them instantaneously tele'd (or lagged . . . I'm leaning towards tele'd though . . . but didn't get to see the stats) right behind me, cursed me, and blew up . . . leaving my sorceress with none of her 370 life left showing in the bulb. Thankfully I had 80 fire resist on her (because as close calls go they don't come much closer than that). So, let's add Teleportation to the list of FE dangers!
OT:
I play LoD on HCL useast and uswest (and have an army of LoD NL HC characters on uswest). I play HCL Classic on useast. I have also been known to do a SP Tournament . . .I should probably just pick one realm/mode but have the most fun starting from the ground up (is ESU round 3 coming soon?)

The other posters are right; FE is lethally dangerous (even to characters with maximum resists and large numbers of life points) in Nightmare (it's some kind of bug, I once knew how it worked exactly but memory goes when you get old...), much less so in Hell (but even there, it still hurts if you are dealing with a high life monster like for example Hell Lister, there are many reports of insta-kills when FE Lister or Venatar die, particularly in games with a high player count that of course boosts monster life).
I'll give you a recent example -- just this afternoon, right off the Nightmare WSK2 waypoint on the way to Baal for the quest, my (then) Level 64 Wind Druid (over 1700 hit points with Oak Sage, 75% resist all in NM, 450+ damage absorb Cyclone Armor, ~50% block and some MDR) ran into a FE enchanted boss electro beetle (e.g. "Steel Scarab").
Being the nice paranoid guy that I am, I advanced cautiously, spamming tornadoes all the way, but I must have been on the bad end of 2 or 3 of the charged bolts that this beetle let out as his parting shot, and just for reference, I was at least a third of the screen away from the monster when it finally croaked.
800 hit points later...
So you figure, that was 800 damage, after 450 deducted for Cyclone Armor and after 75% Fire Resist, and it was only a couple of Charged Bolts.
You have been warned!!!
Cheers
Mr. Bill
