Funny story about the name, I checked the Mat/Pat thread to see if anyone had done this build before and to find out the gear/experiences and whatnot, and I found only two who had done it. After making her and checking the thread again later, I notice one more I missed - someone else had the same bright idea and named their's Supernova. Oh well, she'll just have to be a copycat then, I already grew attached to the name so I've left it as is.
I got the idea for this char from just messing around. One night required that I stay up untill 3am, so I needed something to do, and so made a Sorc. Once again I decided to just go for early game power since I wasn't planning on taking her to Hell and back. I found that Frost Nova worked pretty effectively if you get a +3 staff early on and boost it, and was having a lot of fun, so I wondered if I could do this all the way. I ended up scrapping the character however, since I wasted half my stat points into energy and some skill points into Firebolt, so I started over and picked a fairly unoriginal name and set off.
It was a lot of fun. Frost Nova kicks *** early game, and then Nova is even better, get a +3 staff of either and it'll take 1-2 casts to clear everything, and for a lot of the game, it'll stay that way, making you pretty powerful. Counterintuitively, she's actually pretty safe, Nova casts fast and hits a wide area, so you can keep the button down and keep everything around you in stun-lock if you get some FCR. If you're more daring and crazy, you can safely teleport into most large packs and waste them with some Novas before they can even get a chance to attack. Frost Nova however, was a bit of a disappointment. The damage was severely lacking by the time I was encountering Lightning Immune. I couldn't rely on it to stun-lock like Nova could, which added more problems. I think that for Frost Nova to be effective, you're going to need some pretty uber gear, something like Nightwing's for a start, and a lot of skills (+skills or points into synergies) before the damage would start to get respectable.
By the time I reached Hell though, this had all changed. One of the Nova sorc's biggest problems is high HP enemies, and a lot of monsters in Hell could stand up to a lot of Novas before going down. Some of them were too tough to be stun-locked, and anything Lightning Immune was a nightmare because Frost Nova's damage was pathetic. It fell to my Merc to take care of most of the LI's in the game, so you'll want a good strong merc for this char. Act bosses were some of the worst, I had to practically shove potions down my merc's throat every second to keep him alive since Nova's damage just wouldn't cut it. Some CB on the Merc would be a good idea too. As Hell dragged on I was having less and less fun and things started to become slow and frustrating, by the end I was skipping packs of LI's and teleporting quickly through most areas, ignoring most side-dungeons. After blasting through Normal and Nightmare, Hell was a bit of a downer.
One more thing about Nova is the atrocious mana consumption. By the end of the game I was casting Nova's that cost 43 mana a pop at 8 FPA which is just over 3 per second, so thats 129 mana per second being used every *second*. Insight is a *must*, and so is a decent sized mana pool. Even before you get insight you'll be drinking blues like nothing. Once you get a fat pool and the Insight, you should be fine, you'll be able to cast Novas and most things will die before your mana pool is drained. Extended battles may take a mana pot or two, but so long as your Merc is alive you should be alright.
As for deaths, there were about 5. First was to a FE Scararb in NM, thanks to the invisible corpse explosions that go off when you stun a LEFE monster. I was noticing that all night, but that one finally caught me off guard and killed me. Next was a FECE Spider in NM, double death explosion. Ka-blam! Splat. AAAAGH! The third time was to Hell Talic's WW, I don't know what mods he had since I just rerolled them. Then in WSK2, Gloams struck. I was blind teleporting since I couldn't kill them and theyr hurt too much. I landed between two packs and was fried. Even with 8 FPA casting, blind teleporting can be dangerous. The final death was trying to recover my body from that, which was stupid since I had no chance naked if I died to quickly with gear. 3 deaths attributable to bugs, 1 to stupidity, and 1 to a bad ancient spawn. Not too bad for such a risky in-your-face kind of character, I guess.
Moving on to something else, items. Useful things I found were:
Snowclash - I wanted one of these for a character I'm planning. The ctc blizzard also had great timing here.
Gore Riders!!! - I've wanted these for so long. They'll be sure to put a kick into my melee characters (get it? kick? bwahaha)
Pul rune, and Gul rune
Arm of King Leoric - Found this from an Evil Urn spawn in Hell Ancient's Way. Score.
And finally, heres a little story. I finally made it to the Throne and was ready to get this over with. I took down Baal's minions without too much trouble, and went on to kill him. Things weren't going too good, I was running out of potions and then my Merc died. It was then I realised I was out of TPs, and nearly out of potions, and there was only one way out - his death or mine.
I had a few full revujs and greater healings, but with no Insight it was hopeless. He'd just drain my mana, and if he didn't, I would. It was hopeless, but I was adamant not to give up and die again, so I just save and exited. I'd rather take on all his minions again than let that bastard kill me, so I did. Second time around, it took plenty of potions and several town trips, but I killed him. Hurrah.
Before I do the stats, doesn't this look like a cool pose? I can just image her hitting the ground and seeing a massive electrical shockwave fly ahead, wiping out poor Azrael. Something like that anyway.
