About Spore, tried it at a friends, toyed around with creating stuff and realized it was a poo game.

About the fanboy matchup you're setting up here, both have their places. RPG's on console's > those of PC's, to my taste at least. Also, nothing beats having a bunch of drunk friends over playing PES ^_^ But PC's are so much more adaptable and flexible that they will kick *** until the end of time.

i didnt buy a playstation because im a pc fanboi. i bought a wii because all my friends said it was a "chick console" and then immedeately bought one. turned out that tennis is fun

Diablo isn't what I call an RPG. It's just a hack 'n slash, and top of its game at that.

RPG's to me = proper JRPG's, with a group of 14 Japanese chicks varying between 8 and 13 with massive weapons and pedo-outfits, accompanied by a 30 year old male getting drowned in relationships, friendships, and fighting against an evil power (BWHAHAHAHA evil power).

The thing is, RPG is generally a misnomer when refering to video games. People (mostly) come closer to RP playing Rockband/Guitar Hero than they do playing most games that would generally be called RPGs for consoles or PC. Some people really get into character playing shooters too. I know I get further into the idea of being some sort of general playing BW than I ever got into the idea of being an evil undead warlock playing WoW.

Although I'm well aware Diablo isn't an RPG, I wouldn't call Final Fantasy, Evercrack, Zelda, or whatever else that traditionally has RPG appeneded to it's title RPGs either. Hell, I have a few friends who play muds still... they play them the same way I play Diablo, level up, get items, blow things up... no pretending to be/trying to get in character. I think the same can even be said of pen and paper games, although character is required to some extent just to make the game work on the basic level... some people get further into it than others.

Basically, to summarize, I don't feel it's the game that makes an RPG so much as it is the player base. It'd be quite possible to RP to D2 if one wanted, there's not that much story, but there's definitely enough, and for some RPing folk, making up stories is a lot more fun than having them dictated to you. I'm aware that the game play of Diablo is distinct from that of most so-called RPGs, however the elements that allow for roleplaying are there just as much as any other game, so if you're going to call anything on consoles or PC an RPG, Diablo is too.

Would it make you feel better if I said I still prefer Diablo over the console JRPG's? :P Also, the comic was spot on.

I don't think anyone disagrees with what "RP" is, nor do I think anyone disagrees with what the acronym "RPG" stands for though... I don't think the definition is evolved, just ignored.

However, regardless of if it's evolved or ignored, Blizzard has defined the genre that is D2. They didn't create it, but they've made it what it is. Pretty much unquestionably. I mean, anyone else who tries to make a game in the same genre just has their game labeled "Diablo clone". And Blizzard insists on labeling Diablo an Action RPG, so if the definition of RPG is allowed to be warped, I can't help but feel Blizzard should be allowed to be in on the warping ~_~
