It is a real dungeon crawler. You never see any of them now.
Too many NPC characters in D2, you cant really get to know all of them
Diablo suffers from lack of areas for high-level characters to mess around in. With successive patches, D2 made it so that basically every inch of a hell-difficulty map is worth playing for rewards, which are also highly diverse, and thus has more overall replay value than D1. That being said, Diablo is still excellent. Groundbreaking, atmospheric, and tough.
It has what, 40 NPCs, maybe? Humph. Stay away from Daggerfall's 750,000 NPCs, then.
I honestly prefer endless cow runs. Moo? Moo!
Gamble in d2 is awesome. I wish that was in d1.
How about the ability to go "Woah! What can I do fer ya?" and have people know what you're talking about even if its been 15 years.
So many fond memories of Diablo.
A public game where a cheater joined and spammed "Killbiablo".... I still have the screenshot somewhere.
Taking advantage of some of the game mechanics in character builds. Particularly LAWs (Low AC warriors), or no-AC warriors - warriors who had such low AC that monsters would always hit, BUT had perfect blocking.
Hunting for, and finding, the ultra-rare. My LAW (low-ac warrior) found a Kings/Haste sword, an Obs/Perf ring, and an Emerald/Tiger shield. Oh, and Helm of Sprits. I guess D2 has this - but it doesn't seem the same.
Doing full clears! So much more rewarding in D1 somehow.
Telekilling (can you tell I played warrior mostly?)
Variants in general. BNMs were a good start, but once you really got into em, there was a lot of fun there. I think my Geezer was the most fun to roleplay in public games..... http://realmsbeyond.net/diablo/variantsmaster.html
I loved the feeling of danger and survival right from the beginning.
Also loved how items were simpler making for much easier comparisons. You know when you find something really good almost right away.
And like the other poster said, the death animations were lots of fun. Decapitating ghouls and such. Oh and can't forget the succubi that offered such lovely poses upon defeat, submitting to the hero. Hehe.
