Just have a quick question for all the tech-savy folks out there. I'm moving into my apartment with my 4 roommates (5 total) and we need to get internet. We're going to get a wireless router so that our laptops can pick it up within the apartment, and password protect it just for us.
My question is what should I expect from my ISP so that the internet isn't noticibly slow. Would it make more sense to get 2 lite connections (with double modem/router price) or to get the 1 extreme connection (which might be questionable)
I'm in Waterloo Canada using Rogers.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
going to Laurier or UW?
wanna hang out?
why do you think that an extreme connection would be questionable?
I'd suggest either whichever combo has the greatest bandwidth total, or if it's close just go with the extreme pack from them.
I wonder how you'd do it because most routers only have a single WAN port; unless you'd have a number of laptops only on one and a number only on the other I'd suggest the extreme speed, there will be enough electromagnetic waves flying through the air without throwing another wireless access point into the mix
I'd go with just one router and tell your roommates not to suck up all the bandwidth with torrents and large downloads.
I've lived in 2 houses that had 5 guys in each. A few of us were heavy d/lers too and it all worked out fine with one good connection. Just tell the other people to limit their d/ls or else it can screw the rest of the people over, especially those playing games online.
Okay so I was looking at prices and stuff and there are basically 2 companies I would go with:
Rogers - Extreme connection (10 Mbps, 95 GB Monthly Usage Allowance & 9 emails) $55/month
Express (7Mbps, 60 GB Monthly allowance) $45/month
If the 7Mbps is good for 5 people (plus an xbox) then I think I will go with that. Does anyone know if that would be enough
Oh and I'm 2nd yr laurier.
is 95GB a usual upper bound or is there an unlimited one?
I'm mostly just wondering if my parents had to foot a rather large bill for internet when I went to visit for a month.
Also, with 5 guys check to see what they charge for going over because you can assume it will happen at some point, and probably not by a little.
Upperbounds are evil.
I can hardly share my 250gig with my brother when I'm at my parents place =/
We have very strict download caps here. My current connection is like 7Gb on-peak and 14Gb off. I really should go ISP shopping again.
It's only Dutchies who could say that about 250GB
As for those two providers, I would take the Rogers. 10$ for 35GB and 3Mbs is definately worth it. Unless ofcourse you all download very little. I take about 15GB of our limit of 25GB a month, my sister about 5GB and my dad about 3GB.
I've never heard of a download limit from an ISP before.
Meahwile you should establish rules that torrent and other heavy downloading should be done at night and not at day. That would save you all alot of greif.
