Try Unreal Tournament 3 if you like first-person shooters. I rarely enjoy FPS's but UT3 is an incredible game.
I haven't bought a new computer or console game for years. Instead, I've been playing free online games.
For one, there are lots of old NES games and such. However, you just said you don't like old games, so there are also tons of sites with new flash games; just Google them and see which sites you like.
A few games that have been the most enjoyable: N: The Way of the Ninja, GemCraft, Boxhead variations, BowMaster Prelude, Momentum Missile Mayhem variations, IndestructoTank variations, Punk-O-Matic, 6 Differences (hint: cross your eyes until the two images line up and most differences will pop out at you), and plenty more I can't remember right now.
The thing I really like about them is that most of them I can play for a few minutes/hours and beat or get tired of them. That was one thing I loved about most NES games; you could get your videogame fix in for the week and still have time to do other things. With most games today, you have to play them for weeks on end getting all the accomplishments and things, and I have too many other things to do in life for that. There are a few online games that I've played for too long when I shouldn't have (say, from 9pm to 4am), but then again, those were the most fun.
Even if you are candy eyed, try any of the following:
Fallout
Fallout 2
Silent Storm
KotOR
Company of Heroes + Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts
Now I do realize you've propably played at least 4 of those. So what? They all kick serious *** and are worthy of multiple replays. Fallout 2 and KotOR just get better every time you play them after a significant pause.
Silent Storm is a little unknown in the US, so I'm guessing you haven't played it, possibly not even heard of it. Google it up, it's pretty damn awesome
edit: 2 minutes after typing this up I wan't to go home and install Sē :( Drat your post!
The last year or so has been hell for PC gamers. There has not been a single proper release.
But if you're into grand strategy and don't care for graphics, try: Europa Universalis with all of its addons. Great game.
NWN1 and NWN2 are always great to give another run through.
I almost played fallout 2. I got stuck in the first temple thingy after defeating some spiders and the graphics really turned me off the game.
I want to play Kotor or mass effect but The whole outfit-your-NPC-companions thing never does well with me. having to drag around a unit of NPC's. Only one game ever made that work and that was X-Com Apocalypse and no game in history will ever match the brilliance of that game I fear.
You can pretty much ignore the companions if you want. They have nice sub plots so that might help getting on terms with them
X-Com: Apocalypse ain't got nothing on the original UFO: Enemy Unknown! Terror from the Deep, even with the <insert loud, violent cursing> lobstermen beats it. Then again, you might not like the graphics.
Get a hold of Silent Storm, I'm sure you'll love it. The plot's hilarious and the game engine rocks.
Giants: Citizen Kabuto has a fun plot.
And 3d graphics.
It's true, UFO and TFTD were way better than Apocalypse.
