I almost refused to watch Code Geass because I heard it was a 'mech' anime. While I can't deny there are giant robots, I can say that it isn't all about them fighting. And what was with that ending, amirite? The OVA should've at least explained something about the ending, but no, it was one of those X.5 episodes.
It was pretty obvious what was happening at the end, but still. I thought it could've been much cooler. More death... Especially after that fight with the crazed loli.
I was the exact same, and I was incredibly surprised at how much I was enjoying Geass considering some pretty important action sequences that further the plot are done through mech fight scenes. It was fairly well done in my opinion.
That would be Bible Black, but I would hardly call her a superhero.
Which is why you should consider finding a copy of Genocyber. Or at least part 1 of the OVA. If I recall, the second part didn't even have the robot plot.
And 'Nny was trying to make fun because he doesn't have the same interests as us, therefore must hit it with sticks and recycle jokes he's heard others make.
If you want a decent fantasy anime, I'd recommend going with a classic: Record of Lodoss War.
Noein
- introduces some string, multi-dimensional theories with a cast of middle school kids. Good storyline and explores many things that Elfen Lied never touched on.
Mai Hime
Mai Otome (sequel to Mai Hime)
Mai Otome Zwei (4 episode sequel to Mai Otome)
-deals with high school girls finding their paths in life amid lies, betrayal, and some of the best, most dramatic fights/consequences in recent anime
-easily listed in the top 10 on my list
Byousoku 5cm
-a slower paced anime with plenty of melodrama and addresses things like loneliness, lost loves and lost chances
Bamboo Blade
-an anime that focuses on the training, struggles, and life of a kendo club
Dennou Coil
Ghost Hound
-the two anime are sorta opposites in topics
-Dennou Coil deals extensively with kids playing in and around a 3D virtual city with dangerous bugs (programmer errors) and mysterious shadowy AI
-Ghost Hound reflects the spiritual side of Japanese belief focusing on spirits, psychology, religious politics
-both are highly recommended although they may appear slow at certain episodes

I dunno, I looked it over and saw the animation for it. Not really my style... =/
Plus, I have tons of other animes to catch up on, I have gotten way too many recommendations.

-carrying on the tradition of Songs & Mecha in Outer Space
-MF features lots of mecha action, romantic drama, and a storyline that'll draw you in and keep you watching
Potemayo
-an excellent comedy series that fits into random funny done right
Princess Tutu
-don't let the name or the first few episodes scare you off. This magical girl anime features some of the best storytelling and animation creativity in all of anime.
