Yea it sounds confusing. Perhaps he only needed the bodies to break free and then he reverted to his true self in hell?

Well if that is the case and we fought him with his full strength in both d1 and d2 then I don't see much point in fighting him again unless he has merged with the others or in someway possessed more strength.

Exactly, thats why i dont see any point in him coming back again, it would make no sense.

Anyway i still stick to my belief that they have messed up the soulstones part of the story. The thing conflicts too much in itself...

I don't think it matters if he was in Hell or not, he was still trapped in the soul stone. He might be much stronger now that he is free from it. And since the world stone is destroyed he no longer needs a soul stone to be in Sanctuary.
