How Long Has This Game Been In Development?

All I know is that Blizzard started working on it in 2000 and trashed it the same year. They then changed their minds in 2004 and starting to continue developing it. Does this mean the game is almost complete? They had 4 years to work on it, right?

I believe 3 years. Blizzard North was working on it at the time.

Blizzard North were probably working on it until they got shut down
That's the rumor at least, they were working on it but it wasn't good enough

THIS version has been in development for 4 years

Based on past performance from Blizzard, they are probably 24 to 30 months away from releasing it. 18 months would be very aggressive... if things go bad it could be 36 to 40 months...

Well if it has been 4 years, and we are 1-2 years away....I have to ask:

Did Blizzard contract out the development to the same team that did Vista?

No, but they did tear the game to pieces and start from scratch, usually adds some time onto development, just ask the Duke Nukem Forever team

They scrapped it after Blizzard North was absorbed.

I believe that was in 2003. So assuming they reset by 2004, quite a while.

It was started on the side of LoD the year 2000. The game was hindered when the big four left 2003. With Blizzard North going down in 2005 the game is reported to have gone back to the drawing table.

Still one interview said they've been doing it for over four years. So apparently they kept something from Blizzard North and build on that.

And yet people act as if the game has been under works only couple of months before announcement and predict the release date to something like 2012.

A number of the art works posted on the official site are dated 2004 and at least some of those drawings can be compared directly to in-game images from the current build.
