I've got this idea now for a while about rare monster spawns.
I don't mean the unique packs that spawn in D2, but I'm talking about real rare monsters/bosses that spawn for example once every 100 games on a random location.
Since they can spawn everywere, it might make people play trough entire acts instead of just killing some boss over and over again.
Now the drops of these rare monsters is something else to thing about.
I was thinking to not let them drop godly or massive amounts of good items.
Instead it would be cool if, lets say a rare boss spawn dropped about twice as good as Baal. however, all the variable stats on this drops would be in the top 20%. So for example a magic sword with the 100%ed-200%ed affix would always be 180%-200%.
Differend rares would also drop differend items.
-Normal rare monster, 2x more drops, top 30% affixes
-Normal rare Boss, 2x more drops, top 20% affixes
-Etereal rare boss, 1,5x more drops, top 15% affixes, always ethereal
The monster should drop godly or nobody would run it. The reason is: They know where baal is (The Throne) but if the monster drops only twice as good then why would someone take 3 hours to find a monster in every single act if they could do 2 baal runs in 10mins? So either the monster drops godly or nobody will try to find it anyway.
why not drop one of those monsters random in one of the alvl 85 (or some other special places) places one per game. That way people will start playing more places in one game, make characters that are more general and not so specialist as now, etc.
I can see it work, though I really wouldn't go overboard. Why not simply let it drop good runes with decent chances? We already have a good source of uniques/set (baal, mephisto, shenk), of socketable items (pits, cows), rares can be found by gambling, crafting or just playing with lots of mf, though good runes are very hard to get, there simply isn't a place to go if you want high chances to find good runes.
One way I am thinking is to have rare monsters in lots of area of the game (maybe 1 per area). On killing, the rare monster will drop a trophy corresponding to that rare. Getting 1 of each trophy will give you some good reward that couldn't be otherwise gotten (say a charm as good as the torch, or maybe stat/skill point reward).
In Nightmare, you talk to Akara and she mentions a strange traveler in town. You find this new npc and talk to it about w/e it is that needs to be discussed. He/she tells you he/she is hunting a special creature that has manifested itself in the Dark Woods (location is random and can happen in any act area that you've unlocked) but was wounded in their last battle. You must kill the monster and bring back the relic that it carries, the source of it's stregnth and power... and the source of the strange travelers religious rites... You give said relic to the traveler who in turn gives you a NORMAL item, weapon, ring, ammy, or w/e... that you can pick from a menu, which changes accordingly to your character level. PLUS a piece of the relic. He/she will tell you to take what you picked and give it to a blacksmith PLUS your tiny piece of the relic. In this case... Charsi will accept the two items and hammer out a brand new Unique with base stats, prefixes, affixes, and if you're lucky, another set of bonuses to boot. Of course the roll is random, but predictable to a certain degree. The Traveler will never appear in a Normal mode game. List choices generate at random according to YOUR level and JOB. The monster itself will spawn with random stat mods according to the HIGHEST LEVEL player in the game. After each appearance, the Relic will gradually reduce in size until it's completely exhausted at which point the servers will reset and reroll the Strange Traveler appearance.
