So you are saying that means, "I threw 40 stones that day, but that was the first one I threw"?

I took it as to mean the following:
He threw 40 stones that day.
The record breaking one was the 1st one that was a successful skip.

What he didn't say:
He did not say out of the 40 which attempt this was.
Out of the 40 how many of them were sinkers and how many skipped.

Since he didn't say, I threw 40 stones that day, but this was the only skip I threw, I would be willing to bet that he had other successful skips but they weren't as impressive as this one.

I've mainly skipped rocks in the ocean so getting even 5 was good. Most of the time you'd only get 2 before the next wave got it. So to make it more fun we skipped rocks the size of platters.
