Hello, I've finished nightmare difficulty in diablo 2 classic and I wish to convert to LoD.
Previously I wanted to play hell classic and then do acts 5 only in the expansion; I read however that is advisable to switch to LoD after act 2 hell due to different quest drops.
Is this right or can I play as I wished before?
I've heard that the new game is more difficult, but to find good equipment for the new game I'd just have to do some act V-VI nightmare runs I think.
I didn't also complete the second hellforge quest for the new rune drops (already have far too many gems).

if you convert your hell classic char to lod he will be way under equiped to deal with lod hell
its best to make a new char and play through lod, drops can be better you get runes to make runewords, there are exceptional and elite unique items that can help alot
you should make a backup of your save folder before convert them to expansion then if you dont like the results you can restore your saved chars back
i'd recommend starting a new char for LoD.
Classic is different and can be very fun.
Gosh.. I'm not very enthusiastic to start again from zero..
I'd like to complete the game, but I don't want to play it more than 3 times.. it's entertaining but monsters and locations are the same after all.
Can't I go to act V normal and nightmare and then pass to hell difficulty after I collect enough runes or elite armor? Aren't drops better with higher level char?
Thanks for the answers
You don't need runes or any other type of item to get to Hell at a lower level. You only need to get rushed to Act5 for each difficulty then have someone of the appropriate level kill Baal for the quest while partied with you (both in normal and nightmare) and you will get to Hell. Get rushed to Act4 for Chaos runs (Diaruns if playing Europe), or to Act5 and try to find someone that will do an uberleveling for you. You don't need to worry about killing ancients until you are ready for Hell Baal runs.
Uh, wait I didn't understand well your reply.
I'm doing single player at the moment, so I'm completely alone out there (lol). I'm a Paladin level 59 and I've just finished nightmare (also killed a bunch of hell bovines). So I can reach hell difficulty, but I don't know if I can survive in LoD. Besides, how do I access act V?
What are your skills? What sort of equipment are you using?
Also, there's a single player forum.
In your OP you said you were playing Classic, not Single Player. If you are playing Single Player and want to start playing on the realms, you have to start over from scratch at the beginning. You cannot convert characters/items from Single Player to LoD like you can with Classic.
Unless of course I have completely misunderstood what you're trying to say.
Wait..more confusion..
I'm playing single player classic.. can't I convert to single player LoD? And can't I access to open battlenet multiplayer in both games?
And should I post here the stats or in the single player forum then?
To clear this up, the main reason I can see that people convert characters from classic to expansion is to make it easier to "rush" them. In expansion, you have to do act 5 before you can proceed to the next difficulty. In classic there is no act 5 so rushes are supposed to be faster.
This is why they recommend something like Act III hell. You lose a couple acts when your character goes from classic to expansion, so if you stop at Act I hell, you will no longer be in hell when you convert.
If I were you, I would just make the transition and have fun. If you find you want to start over do so, if not then not.
The rest of the confusion is the result of people making assumptions on if you were single player / battlenet etc. You can access battlenet in both games. If you are single player though, its probably better to take a look at the single player forum.
