Why do you prefer classic to LOD?

I quit LOD because I just got bored with overpowered runewords, etc, etc.

I've never meandered into the classic forum until now, and I was just curious why those of you who still play classic still do so?

Would it be worth playing classic for me? I never played the game until LOD, so I've never played classic before.

Is there any economy after all these years? Would it be difficult to get up and running on classic?

    Thanks for any replies

classic is still up and running. to get started will take more time than on lod probably because lots of good items drop from the getgo on expac, but then again i met someone other day who started 2 weeks ago and acct was better than how mine was after i played for 3 months (much better now) because he got lucky finds.

i play east nl and hundereds of people are usually on during the day.

i suggest you try it and see if you like it. once you get good its alot of fun.

good luck in classic, pm me if your gunna play east

Basically I played d2 1.00 SP, then b.net on 1.01-1.02 and stop playin till 1.07. Then I played expac. In 1.10 came back to both and now on 1.11 I only play classic because IMO expansion pack make the barbs the ULTIMATE LIFEFORM...

Yes you should try classic, specially in the east realms

Classic can take a little longer to get going (as previously mentioned). I think it takes more skill to play = more challenge = more fun.

A combination of things for me really but here's my shortlist:

    1. Overpowered Runewords
    2. EBay supported by duped overpowered runewords
    3. Bots entering games to spam ads for websites that sell overpowered runewords
    4. Every noob & their dog having the SAME overpowered runewords
    5. Being called a NooB for CHOOSING not to have the aforementioned overpowered runewords on every character

Wohoo!! I just got off work- more later, maybe.....

For some reason I never got into xpack. I played a few times, made some chars and used good (but not GODLY) gear given by friends from classic. Couldn't tell you why I didn't enjoy it really, it's like playing a different and crappy game.

One of the things I think keeps the interest level around is that in classic, you are never 'finished' with a setup. I've never seen perfect gear, there is always something that is possible that would be better than what you are wearing, so that is maybe part of it.

Another thing is the smaller community, where everyone knows each other. It's more of a tight-knit players group than LOD. A lot more common ground I think.

The gameplay itself is much more enjoyable in classic. Baal runs are just the most boring thing I've ever experienced in my life. MF in expack is not fun at all, because there are only certain things you want to find. No point picking up a rare leather armor in expack...

I've always loved CS runs, I couldn't tell you why. I've done thousands and thousands. It's relaxing but engaging at the same time. The competition in ladder play on classic is interesting.

When someone gains a huge chunk of exp overnight or whatever, everyone notices. Again the aspect of a smaller community where more players know each other. I think classic is not for everyone, but you may find that you come to enjoy it after a time. Just don't expect the same game you played on LOD.

Doug is spot on with his statements. I just don't like the idea that one or two items are undeniably the best possible for a certain character. On classic, sure the best Sorc amulet in theory is something like +2, 10 fcr, 60 life, 20 str, prismatic, +LR or MF, but no one will ever find that. There's always something better out there. On expansion, you trade for (or buy) a 415% Superior Ethereal Breath of the Dying Berzerker Axe on your Barbarian and you're done with that slot. Also, you probably will not find classic items on ebay. At least not for the ladder. Everything everyone has they had to earn in-game.

As mentioned, the community is nice, too. Sadly, the hardcore classic ladder community is all but nonexistent, but I'm confident that when the ladder resets it'll come back for a while.

And like Doug, the Chaos Sanctuary is my favorite zone in the game. I've ran it thousands upon thousands of times on many different characters. In fact, since I picked up the game back when it was still in v1.03, I've been through every act hundreds of times (more often than not actually doing the quests, not just being rushed), and it's fun every time I do it on hardcore classic.

I play ladder just for the clean economy, since there are non-ladder items that are undeniably the best for their slots as nothing as good can be dropped anymore.

I first started playing classic because I played hardcore only and in public games. Lot less ways to effectively tppk a high lvl char in classic and you can see it coming a mile away. Then I just started to like the game alot more than LoD and now I don't even play hc anymore but I can't see myself going back to LoD.

The ladder classic economy is legit and balanced. Only few ppl play classic so the item sellers don't bother us. The game is harder and can be alot more time consuming if you want it to be. It's not like LoD where all the "godly" players end up with the same items. Since classic is based around rares there's always room for improving your char. I have never seen a rare item that is as good as it could possibly be - it simply doesn't exist. But with all that the difference between a godly char and a char with ghetto gear isn't much at all. A good player can do everything he wants to do in the game with gear he can get off nm meph; and the reverse if also true - even with the most godly gear if you don't know what you're doing classic will be too hard for you.

Doug hit the nail on the head. The community is better than LOD i think. Though, there are always *******s and noobs wherever we go. You see people level and youll see the same people over and over especialy in Hell cs's. If anyone has seen PBJ_Sandwich around, thats me. He is a perfect example of what Doug is talking about, when I join a game people know the name PBJ_Sandwich as the cleric. People learn the good chars from the bad, the noobs from the vets. I enjoy classic alot better than LOD.... and only 40% of it is the dumb items. Having something like rares to look foward to instead of the same uniques that EVERYONE has is alot more interesting.

So it sounds like people use rares eh? I've felt for a while that rares are really the true "uniques." I know it's just a little bit of semantics, but I always felt like an item wasn't truly unique if it spawned with the same stats (or variable stats anyway) every single time. If everyone is using it, then how is it unique, right? Maybe that alone would be enough to get me interested in classic, but I won't have a ton of time until August...

So, as a complete noob to classic, what is the most recent patch for classic? I'm sorry if it's a totally stupid question, but I really have no idea what it would be...

Thanks for all your responses. I really do appreciate it.

Patch is 1.11, same as LoD. Game is pretty much the same, biggest difference is the items I think.
