I play on NL West and trade very often.
I made a game called "Grief 4 Infinity" and was waiting patiently for people to come to my game, and sure enough within a few minutes I got 2 interested buyers. Unfortunately neither had an Infinity to trade, but they both had nice gear.
The first buyer showed me his gear which was mostly elite eth runeword (probably dupes), but I was interested in his eth hoz. He said he would think about it for a minute, then closed the trade window. He proceeded to open a trade with the other guy that came to my game, so I waited patiently for a few minutes to see how things would play out.
The same guy came back to me and offered me a deal that was too good to be true. He said, that other guys a complete noob, and he wont sell me his "imps" for my good gear! He then said "If you talk to that guy and trade your grief for the imps I will trade you the hoz plus extra items, please please please I need those boots! That guy wants a grief!
I went to open trade with the other guy and told him to show me his stuff for trade. Sure enough he had some imps for trade, but they werent imp shanks. They were a crappy knock off of imps with only 1 res mod on them.
My immediate assumption was that these guys are working together as a team to scam people, or this guys was using 2 accounts to try and scam.
I told him to take his friend and get the **** out of my game. He didnt say a word and left after a few minutes of silence.
I dont know, but it sure smelled like a scam to me.
Anyone else get scammed recently? How did it happen to you?

The scene you describe is indeed a common scam. I always love to see the lengths some jerks will go to scam people. Most of those scammers are incredibly stupid. Thanks for sharing this story. I always appreciate a good laugh.

When i was younger I actually fell for this scam in .09 which was unfortunate, but it taught me a very valuable lesson. Dont trust b.net people, most of them are only interested in personal gain.

I fell for the switcheroo like 3 years ago without losing anything valuable.
After that I've never been scammed, had lots of attempts though.
I think the recent attempt was someone else claiming to be the etf member I was supposed to trade with.

Had one last night where a guy stood across the river in act 1, with me in town, and told me to "drop gear so I can see you're trustworthy." I lauged at him, and said "This scam won't work on me." He got all defensive and when I mentioned him teleporting into town to steal my stuff, he yelled (all caps, I assume he was yelling), "I'm a Paladin noob, only Sorcs tele, now drop your gear you <expletive deleted>" I can't imagine that line of reasoning tricking someone into dropping their gear, but anyway he left a while after that, still spouting curses because I wouldn't drop my gear. I had a good laugh over that.
