Can anyone help explain why I keep getting this error everytime I try running Diablo 2: LoD? I can't even play, and I'm really itching to get started with the new season.

It means the CPU has run into code which it was not allowed to execute because it wasn't in the proper internal stage. But that's not important. I guess your installation got corrupt. Uninstall and install again.

BTW, has it been a blue screen (so you had to reboot) or just a message box (and everything ran fine thereafter) ?
