Really? The bastids! Put the full version on DVD goddamn it...
Sorry to quote such an old post. I agree for the most part about the bulk of the movie being slow. It had it's thrilling moments but they were too far between. The ending was also quite abrupt.
Did any one else keep wondering the whole movie if they neighbor had something to do with the dad's death? That would've been a nice twist.
Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever
Well, I heard a lot of hype about how bad this movie was, what a load that was. Sure, it's a bad movie, a really bad one even, but it's nowhere near the stratospheric badness of any number of others. Hell, it's not even as bad as your average Stephen Seagal or Jean Claude Van Damme movie; I find those completely unwatchable, but even in this Antonio Banderas is charismatic enough that I managed to sit through it.
By this I do not mean to imply in any way, shape or form that this movie has any redeeming qualities, it's just highly overunderrated.
Highlights (lowlights?):
-Ray Park demonstrating why he is never given speaking roles.
-The origami scene at the end... what the hell was that... "Oh ****, I'm a Replicant!"
Oh, and Rottentomatoes gave it the title of worst movie ever, just goes to show how bad their taste in bad is.
it does have one of the worst titles, it's a "one of" in every bad category, but definitely not the worst of the worst
I only saw a few minutes of it, I have my limits
Goldfinger
Well, that's more like it. I saw From Russia With Love earlier - it wasn't particularly bad but it wasn't particularly good either - and that kind of made me appreciate this one, everything is done so much better.
Tight pacing (From Russia really dragged its heels at times), impressive visual style, clever dialogue (yes, I said that of a Bond movie - there were a few of the traditional awful puns but I was put in such a good mood by the rest of it that they didn't bother me at all), solid cast and iconic moments aplenty. It really personifies the whole Bond thing, carries it off beautifully.
Gert Frobe's Goldfinger was flawless (apparently he was dubbed, I didn't notice, amazing), Honor Blackman was quintessential (a magnificent looking woman giving a magnificent performance with a magnificent name, what more can you ask for?), Shirley Eaton was ravishing and unforgettable, Harold Sakata was of course one of the most memorable Bond villains, and Lois Maxwell and Desmond Llewelyn really pushed their roles to the hilt on this one; the hat scene was a clever little upstaging of the one in the previous film and Q's distaste for 007 and the whole gadget showcase were done marvellously, where they'd barely been touched upon in From Russia (the former didn't seem to exist at all).
Even the legendary blatant sexism is so egregious it's delightful.
Normally I hate Bond movies, but there's no two ways about it, it's an excellent film.
I saw 28 Weeks Later this weekend. Traded the social commentary of the original for some big explosions and special effects. Typical "cash-in" sequel. Not worth seeing, in my opinion.
The only good thing about it is the young stars real names are Imogen Poots and Mackintosh Muggleton.
Yeah, I meant to mention it.
The whole title sequence seemed like a much improved version of From Russia's, with the idea of using the woman's body as a projection screen done again but a lot better with that great gold skin.
