I don't know about the rest of the world, but I call movies of the ilk of this new Thing, "pre-makes"
Yeah I was referring to the 1982 version, not the 1950whatever version.

    The Thing (1982)
    Rating: 8.5/10
    Fun: 8/10

A group of American researchers are stranded in Antarctica without any communication with the outside world when a strange alien species begins killing them off, while creating infected clones of those that it killed.

Great movie in many aspects. Particularly the paranoia/survival aspect, I really enjoyed the portion of the movie where the humans were trying to survive while trying to determine who is or is not infected. I spoke to my dad about the movie and he told me that when the movie came out, it was the most realistic looking horror movie he has ever seen. Unfortunately the special effects did not age well, however I can totally see how they were really impressive back in the day. The movie wasn't necessarily a horror movie, it was more of a sci-fi movie with horror elements, kind of like the Alien movies. The acting was pretty average, some people did well (Kurt Russel), others didn't perform quite as well as him. The only thing I really didn't like bout the movie is how there were so many characters who didn't really get any formal introductions, yet they are all referred to on a first and last name basis. Throughout the movie when they say "I think ___ is infected", I spent too much time thinking who the hell is that. It would have been nicer if the characters were easier to identify. Regardless, it was a great movie and I really enjoyed it. The movie itself ages well, even though the special effects do not.

    Aladdin (1992)
    Rating: 10/10
    Fun: 10/10

A wealthy royal family assistant tries to gain access to a magic lamp by tricking a poor young man into retrieving it for him. The poor man falls in love with the princess, although he questions her interest in him because of his social status.

This is another Disney classic, right after Lion King, this takes an immediate second place for me. The plot is good and entertaining for all ages, the characters are all amazing, the songs are memorable, and the Genie provides more laughs than you can imagine. I had a blast rewatching this movie, it was a huge trip down memory lane. The movie is still excellent to this day, and I hope they make a 3D remake of this so I can see it on the big screen as well. But again, I cannot stress enough how hilarious Robin Williams is as the Genie. Highly recommended to everyone, especially those who have not seen it. This movie, along with the Lion King, will trash any new Pixar movie.

    As I have gotten older.
Movie and Concert as a art form have for me personally died.

Not the art form's fault really but that kind of publicly assembled group/supervision safe background no longer has a forum.

    Re: Movie Review thread.

I finally found Outland on youtube.

    Outland (1981)
    Rating: Very good.

A marshal (Sean Connery) running security on Jupiter's mining moon Io discovers that workers are becoming manic and suicidal at alarming rates. After finding the source, his investigations and drive to be more than a tight-lipped nobody land him in serious peril with a sort of space mob.

My only complaint is that apart from some interesting space deaths, the movie lacks any true hearted sci-fi concepts. The whole story could easily take place on a remote mining island in modern times. Everything is picturesque, though, and definitely worth a watch. The marshal knows he was sent to an obscure mining operation with the expectation of turning a blind eye to the illegal goings-on. He instead challenges his reputation by making a difference. Much is at stake, providing some intense character arcs.

    Trancers (1985)
Rating: Not good. Not good at all.

A future cop named Jack Death (really?) lies on a slab to take his mind back to the 80's, possessing the body of his ancestor, to capture a psychic villain. Lots of people must die for some 90 y/o old hag in government.

There is so much wrong with this film, I don't know what it's doing in top 100 sci fi movies lists. Whenever you have a premise about bodies getting taken over, it's just a half assed excuse for providing a corpse count to keep the audience awake. The protagonist is given two wristwatches that can freeze time for all but himself, which makes me wonder why the villain is any threat at all with such technology at hand. Why doesn't Mr. Death take a thousand of these godsend watches? And about that villain...he delivers a very detailed video message to his political opponents explaining precisely how he will kill them, thus giving them the upper hand to take defensive measures.

Too many ideas got jumbled together in a great mess: psychic mind and body control, time travel tech for the consciousness, a poorly described future dystopia, ancestor assassination to wipe out family lines, a lot of cerebral nonsense backed by boyish action. The ending suggests our grumpy hero makes a sacrifice by staying in the 80's, but both he and his body in the future are perfectly fine, so...just watch the Terminator instead.

    Puss In Boots (2011)
    Rating: 7.5/10
    Fun: 9/10

An outlaw cat tries to locate magic beans, in order to grow a beanstalk and reach the goose which lays golden eggs in the clouds.

This is an excellent movie for the whole family. Kids will love it, and its very entertaining even for adults. I had a blast with the movie, it was really funny, the plot was goofy and entertaining, and the characters were excellent. The story of the movie was weird, to me it felt like it had several sub stories, which all worked together into one major plot. For example there was a 15 or so minute flashback, and then it felt like the entire plot changed several times throughout. There were at least two instances where I thought "wow, is that really it?", because it felt like it was going to end abruptly. Then it felt like it dragged on after that because it had several end points. Regardless, that didn't change my opinion of the movie. I loved it and would not mind seeing it again.

I just saw Read Window in its entirety for the first time last night. I've seen the whole film before, but in segments, so to be able to watch all of it uninterrupted was nice. What I can conclude is that it is impeccable, like virtually all Hitchcock, but that it would be nice to have some zoom at a few key points. It is sort of hard to watch what is going on otherwise.

You mean Rear Window? I only saw the first bit, but now I think I'll go look for it. There was a Kate and Alley (old sitcom) episode where Chip is watching a man across the street doing suspicious things to a woman, but he turns out to be a magician practicing on the legs of a mannequin that was only partially visible from Chip's vantage point. I've always wondered if this is was a parody of Rear Window or a spoiler.
