Saw Wanted yesterday. For what it was, it was good. The acting was better than expected. Not Oscar quality, but better than some of the "action" tripe that's out there. I liked the action sequences as well - a few of them were particularly well-done... most notably the climax to the movie (final showdown).
Overall, the movie worked more for me than I thought it would... and I went in without the highest expectations.
I see a fair amount of movies though... so Hellboy II is next on the slate and Batman soon to follow.
Hellboy 2
over all 6/10
fun 8/10
Coming in to this not really liking the first movie, i had low expectations. i must say i was really impressed. the one thing that really bugged me about the first one was the whole "top secret" bit. in the books he's a big red demon looking monster and everyone kinda accepts it without comment. with this film they brought him out into the open more and did away with most of the "you cant be seen" crap.
this movie bogged down a bit in the romantic bits (i actually boo'd during one it was terrible), but other than that it's a terribly fun movie. the golden army itself is a bit of cool CG and the regular plot element of hellboy getting the snot kicked out of him for most of the fight scenes, but somehow coming out on top is there.
i'd say overall if you're a fan of the books, you'll like this more than the first, i know i did.
Untraceable (2008)
Rating: 4/10
Fun: 6/10
A serial killer kidnaps innocents and sets up a live webcam stream of their death, the more hits the website receives, the faster and more painful the death. An FBI agent works on catching him.
It was supposed to be basically a slasher movie, it reminded me of Saw, but really lacking in all departments. It was fun i guess, worth watching once if you're bored. The acting was really bad though, the plot was really lame, even the violence was sort of anti-climatic. It was more of a take on how the internet is becoming such a brutal and violent place, full of videos of gruesome deaths and murders. Not really that great, but worth the watch if you're really bored one day. Its like a Saw knockoff.
I liked the Hellboy comics, the ones I read anyway, and I guess it would be hard to like a movie less than the last Hellboy.
The Bank Job (2008)
Rating: 6-8/10
Fun: 6/10
Based on the true story of the London bank robbery in 1971. Terry, the owner of a failing car lot is offered a deal by his ex-girlfriend to get the cut on a bank robbery and he'd never have to pay debt again, but she has a deal by a crooked government official to recover pornographic photos of a Princess of England, which are being held in a safety deposit box for a court case for civil rights activist, Michael X. The story revolves around corrupt police and government officials.
It was a very good movie, but it was really difficult to follow sometimes. Thats why i rated it 6-8, the first time watching it is interesting, but you dont get the full experience, watching it the second time it would be an amazing movie. I believe that the first 25 minutes or so really need to be redone, because its all just a bunch of random scenes that dont really make sense until later, and its a really crucial part of the story so you get lost later on. Besides that, it was great, very intelligent movie, and throughout most of the movie it keeps you at the edge of your seat. The acting was great as well, everyone played their role very well. But again my biggest complaint is just the first 25 minutes of the movie made the rest of it incredibly confusing. Plus the majority of the first 25 minutes was just one random scene after another. This isnt the movies fault, but it took me awhile to tune into the accents as well, so it was sort of hard to register what they were saying for a little while. Overall, its a great movie, but you have to watch it at least two times to get the full effect.
Ooh, looked it up, sounds woeful.
I watched Crank again, awesome movie.
Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D (2008)
Rating: 5/10
Fun: 7/10
A scientist and professor finds his brother's old book describing how to get to the center of the Earth. He goes with his son and a mountain guide to search for a path into the center of the Earth.
For whatever stupid reason, my theater didnt have it in 3D, which was the main reason why i wanted to see the movie. So that cut out a huge chunk of the rating. Overall, it was a rather fun family movie, after awhile it started feeling like a true journey/adventure movie. The other reason i saw it is because i have no idea why, i always loved Brendan Fraser movies. It was a rather fun movie, but the biggest gimmick that got me to see it didnt even exist, which sucks.
