Bruce Lee, The Fist of Fury (1972)

A Hong Kong Martial arts classic.

It's a great action movie with a basic storyline. Can't really say more about it.

I give it 4/5 stars. Its a simple movie and it works.

    Pain and Gain (2013)
    Rating: 9/10
    Fun: 11/10

A personal trainer wants to become rich and respected, so he hires two fellow members at the gym and they kidnap one of the trainer's wealthy clients and attempt to extort him for everything he owns.

I really wasn't expecting to enjoy the movie this much, its definitely one of those movies that take you on a roller coaster ride. The movie is two hours long, but extremely fast paced. It really feels like the movie starts off full speed by just throwing out character introductions and jumping straight into the plot. Granted that the plot isn't really award winning, but its definitely entertaining, especially because its true (you wonder how much of it REALLY is true, but they even gave captions after some twisted parts of the movie saying "THIS IS STILL A TRUE STORY"). I loved the style of the movie, it was basically a crime thriller, but loaded with action and comedy throughout. As their own category, it wasn't an amazing crime thriller, action movie, or comedy, however the mashup of the three was incredible. It takes you from feeling sad for a character, to being grossed out, to laughing, and to being shocked at what is happening in a matter of a few minutes. The acting was excellent, but similar to the plot, the roles didn't really require any intricate acting skills or anything. Basically most of the characters had to be stupid or douchebags, or both. Also, I know Michael Bay gets a bad reputation as an actor, but I will always stand by my statement, his movies are almost always entertaining. There were several really cool story telling techniques and little effects that made the movie more light hearted. I had a blast with this movie, and I would love to see it again in theaters. I would recommend it to everyone, but I have a strong feeling a lot of people would get offended by this movie. Plus, since it is based on a true story, I can foresee some controversy (if there isn't any already, I don't know) about glorifying some really awful crimes. It basically takes a lot of offensive content and makes it seem alright.

I'm going to have to give it a miss, since I'm taking boy to a Scout Camporee. However, it sounds pretty damn good (Kurt Loder).

    Re: Movie Review thread.

I saw Django Unchained this weekend, not by choice, everyone else wanted to see it

At first it was less bad than I expected, but by the final third of the movie it was just as bad as I figured it would be. Poor pacing, disjointed/non-existant storyline, manufactured conflict to produce tacked on action sequences, it was a textbook bad movie. I knew I wouldn't like it, I didn't like Basterds, and I have learned that if Tarantino makes a movie based on a genre I like, I will hate his interpretation - kind of like seeing a Rob Zombie movie, maybe if I had never seen a decent horror movie in my life I wouldn't hate the Rob Zombie version - but I have seen westerns and I have seen ****ty westerns, and now I've seen one more ****ty western. Aside from it being a poor member of the genre it was a poor member of any genre, any movie that would hope to indulge the audience and pay them back for the emotional investment they make - there is no pay off, no catharsis, the movie had no heart and no soul. I am inclined to believe the well has gone dry for Tarantino, I mean, I compared him to freakin Rob Zombie, how much lower can you get?

Gonna do reviews of End of Watch, Broken City, and Gangster Squad. All of which I watched on a plane to go overseas, technology has changed so much, you have a ton of new movies to choose from on the flight. None of them were that great.

And seeing Fast 6 tonight so I'll do that too.

    End of Watch (2012)
    Rating: 6/10
    Fun: 7/10

One cop uses a camera to record his daily experiences with his partner over the course of several months.

I don't understand how I expected this movie to be good. While it could have been a cool concept, to make a fake video recording of two police officers in their daily routines, similar to Cloverfield or Paranormal Activity, but unfortunately it fell short. The opening sequence was cool, a car chase which ends in a shootout from the perspective of the dash cam. I think the problem about the movie is that it felt like it was thought out by a high school video project. A little bit of story, an almost completely irrelevant action scene, a little bit of story, another completely irrelevant action scene, then the story gets painfully predictable, and some more unrelated action scenes. This continues throughout the entire movie. The action scenes are filmed in a similar fashion to the TV show Cops, which is cool, but like I said when the events that they are filming are absolutely unrelated to the story, its less interesting. Like I mentioned, the plot is definitely one of the most predictable plots in any movie, in a sense they spell out exactly what will happen. While it was sort of entertaining, I wasn't satisfied with the movie at all. I saw it on a flight overseas, so it did a great job of passing time, but I am not really recommending it to anyone.

    Broken City (2013)

    Rating: 7/10
    Fun: 7/10

The mayor of NYC seeks the help of an NYPD detective to find evidence that his wife is having an affair during the upcoming elections.

This movie seemed like it could have had potential, Russell Crowe starring as the NYC mayor and Mark Wahlberg starring as the NYPD detective, they're perfect for the roles. Unfortunately the plot wasn't as exciting as it seemed in the trailers, and it turned out to be a really slow and boring thriller movie. The acting was excellent though, I really have to comment that almost all of the actors did a great job with their roles, and the movie was filmed well, its just that it was lacking meat in the storyline. The story felt like one of those straight to TV movies, while it had potential, it just felt like it lacked anything that made it remotely exciting. Even the plot twist or the finale wasn't very exciting, it was all melodramatic and just felt very uninspired. The movie had great potential but it fell short. Wasn't necessarily a bad movie, it was just really lacking in excitement.

    Gangster Squad (2013)

    Rating: 6/10
    Fun: 7.5/10

In post WWII Los Angeles, a group of specialists and police officers work together to bring down one of the most ruthless and dangerous criminals in the city.

The movie felt like it was a little too flashy in all areas. I think they tried to make the movie a little too badass and a little too serious at the same time, which made for this strange combination where you just don't know how to feel. Basically, the movie is incredibly dark and grimy, tons of violence and gore, but they add this late 1940's feel to it. So while it feels all dark and badass, it also feels very unauthentic and you can't really buy into the excitement of the movie because of that. Some of the action scenes were very well done, but like I said, they felt way too flashy for the era that the movie took place in. Loaded with things such as slow motion gun firing, slow motion explosions and things breaking, it just felt really out of place. I really enjoyed how dark it was, granted that I don't think it captured 1940's LA in a very realistic light, it was entertaining enough. I also liked the cast, lots of good actors, lots of unappreciated actors, and there was a lot of talent behind this movie. But a lot of the talent felt like it could have been used in other movies, because there wasn't ever really a time where it felt necessary in this movie (with the exception of Sean Penn being the bad guy, which he played very well). Overall, it wasn't a very serious movie as I anticipated, and it really didn't have any kind of depth to it, but it was sort of entertaining. I had fun with it once, I don't think I have any interest in seeing it again though.

    Fast and Furious 6 (2013)
    Rating: 5/10
    Fun: 6/10

The gang who retired from the criminal lifestyle has to reunite one more time to save an old friend who they thought was dead.

I wasn't expecting it to be good, I wasn't really excited to see it either, I just wanted to see it because I saw every movie up until this point. Its official though, the movie is 100% no longer about street racing or cars, it was becoming more and more apparent with each movie, but this movie almost completely abandoned that. There was ONE race in the entire movie (not counting the little 20 second scene at the start of the movie), and the cars were cool and everything but you could tell it was no longer even a part of the focus (that being said, they were also the least exciting ones thus far). I understand that Fast and Furious never had the most intricate characters, however you grew to love them over the movies, and even they felt wildly generic in this movie. The one thing that was always consistent felt disappointing in this movie. And also, I wasn't expecting some award winning plot, but the plot in this movie was a damn shame. On top of it all, the action scenes which everyone knows were coming, were pretty lame as well. Most of them were not exciting, but the grand finale had WAY too much going on for me to even care as to what was happening. Then the movie did a horrible job marketing, because they basically revealed the two most "WOW" scenes in the entire movie in the FIRST TEASER of this movie, so the over the top action scenes that could have wowed you, you already know are coming throughout the whole movie. Overall, every single aspect of this movie was a letdown. HOWEVER, the last 30 seconds of the movie all of the sudden made things incredibly interesting again, and I will not spoil why. If it wasn't for the last 30 seconds of the movie, it would have been safe to say that if they made another movie (which they will), I would not see it unless I heard it was amazing. To me personally, the last 30 seconds of the movie made me want to see the next movie. Regardless though, if you're a fan, you're aware of the violent downward spiral the movies have been heading down for a long time now, and this simply continues the trend and sends the series spiraling even faster. But like I mentioned, based on how big of a fan of the series that you used to be, there is a chance that the last 30 seconds may spark interest again.
