    Damage/AR trade off formula??

Hi all... I have a pretty simple question on AS/Damage but never really figure it out the exact relation. In terms of total damage per unite of time (sec?), what is the trade off rate? i.e. if I have a character which using weapon A which deals higher damage but provides less AR (due to weapon class) than using weapon B, which deals less damage but with higher AR; for how many more damage I shd consider using a less AR weapon.

In order to examplify the question, I give u a true example here. My Smiter is using "Alantern" which provides plus two skill and deals 54-129 damage. I found another Hydra Edge which provides no plus skill but with higher damage - 84-205. When I have the Fanatism ON, the former deal 458-1097 damage and AR is 6682; and the latter deals 660-1537 damage and AR reduce to 5564. As u can c, the latter has almost 50% more damage but with 20% less AR. Which one actual provides higher Ture Damage to monsters?

To complicate the issue more, in the future if I use weapon with certain percentage of DS or CB or both; how do I judge the trade off (shd there be one)?

Tx all for ur enlightenment. I know tis sounds newbie but I have to ask for the sake of future gear selection which also applies to other melee character (i guess).

Since this is for pvm,the best way to tell which weapon is best is watch your killing speed. It isn't only damage vs ar,you have to put other factors into consideration. Block or no block, whether you deal mostly physical or elemental damage in conjuction with physical/elemental resists, crushing blow etc, open wounds, life of monster etc etc.

If you want a simple formula, it is this:
damage per second = damage * (average attack number per second) * Chance to hit / 100.

Of course, there are other factors as well, and not all things on this formula are easy to calculate. You can use the LCS to help but it is not too accurate on some weapons......

Thank you kdl and AC for the advices. One more question tho, how to convert the known data (those on character screen) to average attack number per sec?

This is where you look up the IAS tables and such on the forum, or just time how many whacks are you doing in 10 seconds, against something that doesn't die easily. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to tell from the character screen.
